I received the new Vette magazine and in the product preview section it has a Quaife Diff. by Unitrax. I've heard good things about them in the past in many imports and other vehiciles. I was wondering if anyone was running one in there car?
They go for about $1,650. Their are no clutches in the unit it is gear operated. It also comes with a limited lifetime warrenty. I thought maybe I would post here and see if anyone has this unit in their car and could give some insight on how it is.
I'm 99% sure this is the diff JB is running in his car. I may be hallucinating but I think his is even setup with a cooler somehow?
Thats good to know I'll PM him and find out...What does "IB4TJB" mean? I'm not a noob but I always see you guys typing that and don't know what it is...lol
From what I was told by Unitrax, I got the first Unitrax/Quaife built 373 diff on a C5 In the world.
I've had a few diffs done by Unitrax, since my clutch pacs wear out every 15 months or so, just about the same time I rip a tooth or two out of my ring and pinion...
Since the quaife eliminates the clutch pacs, and does come with a lifetime warranty, Unitrax thought I was a good candidate to try it out on!
I've had no issues with it, and love the way it works!! It does allow nice hookup on exits out of the turns, and has held up great so far!
Unitrax worked with Orange County corvette on the install. Unitrax had the 373 gears machined a bit to accept the C6 Z06 rear cover for the diff. It has a built in pump, that Sean at OCC then hooked up to a cooler and installed the custom lines! The system works great, and keeps temps nice and cool on the track and canyon.

The Quaife appears somewhat similar to GleasonTorsen (spelling?) in theory of operation. A friend had a GleasonTorsen in his race car and loved it, I did drive it on a few occasions and it does great out of corners (especially tight ones).
I’d say this is a great roadrace mod as noted above, not sure on drag applicability.

Mike - Yes, the Quaife is a Torsen based LSD. I installed one on my supercharged G35 & it was a GREAT addition! It was quiet ( as opposed to the NISMO LSD ) & allowed just enough "release" coming out of corners so that the car didn't want to push the rearend out. I was mostly a drag racer ( weird for an import, I know! ) but the Quaife worked well there also.

I have installed one in a differential I built for a customer(Billiardcue). Maybe he will chime in as well. I was impressed with the quality of the Quaffe and I know he really likes the operation of it. We have also installed a few of the differential pumps/coolers that Joel was talking about in his post.
Quaife defo make good stuff..although a bit pricey.
Fair enough I have a Live axle in my car ( 8.8" ), but I also use a Torsen diff...and it cost $500 a few years ago.. The US based stuff is just so damn cheap !!!
Which when it gets to me in the UK....is about £300 !!!! Its about 1/3 of the price of a Quaife unit.
So far Ive found mine veyr good for drag racing, and every day use.. But they do need both wheels to have some traction in order to work.
If one wheel goes very light or even airbourne, traction will be lost.
Some newer Torsen designs come pre-loaded so this doesnt happen. I'll be upgrading to one of these newer ones soon.
Odd that someone in the US doesnt offer a Torsen diff for you guys already ???
When I was helping build some high hp Civics the Quaife limited slips were about all that would hold the power besides the spools. They were about $900 for a fwd unit for the civic, we didn't have a ton of torque going thru it (I will have to find the sheet) but we had over 700whp going thru it with 28"x10" slicks with no problems.
Lifetime warranty doesn't matter if you race or not, gotta love that.
So what kind of power can the Quaife hold with hardened shafts?
Can it handle a set of nittos or BFG drag radials under hard launches?
JB- How long have you had yours in your car? Have you had to replace it at all?
Thanks,
John
I've not replaced it since install about 6 months ago. I put down over 700 RWHP, and run NT-01s, which grab real good!!!
I've launched pretty hard down low with no problems!! I believe, that my Unitrax/Quaife diff has hardened shafts on both sides...

Thanks Joel...Looks like I'm going to try the Quaife after all
