I know the oil issue must've been discussed a thousand times and I've done numerous searches but I still have a bunch of questions:
1. Which viscosity is right for a warm climate like So. California?
My oil temps are in the 220 range when driven normally, up to 260 when I get on it for a long time. I'm planning on putting in a cooler to keep the temps under 240 in extreme conditions.
I'm using Mobil 1 15w50 but I'm concerned that my oil pressure doesn't jump up the way it used to with 10-30 M1. Also, I know M1 is good to about 400 degrees.
2. I really haven't raced it or anything too extreme - I imagine I will go through about 1 quart every 1,ooo miles - does this seem right?
3. I know everyone has a specific brand of oil they're partial to, just curious as to what you use?
LPE recommended the 15w50 M1 and I used to run it but it was too thick in the winter. So now I run the 10w30 M1 all year long with no issues. I think using a quart every 1000 would bother me but a quart is a lot cheaper then a rebuild.
15w50 sounds about right for a stroker motor in SoCal. I run Redline 15w50 in my 402. Try a Baldwin or K&N oil filter if you are concerned about oil pressure. Dunno if your L92 takes the same filter as the LS1/LS2/LS6, but if so, Baldwin B31 is the correct one. I use them exclusively and buy 'em by the case.
A quart every 1000 miles sounds like a bit much, but maybe not for your blown stroker. Do you know where it is going (past the rings and fouling the plugs, into the tb/intake, catch can)?
On my FRC I use 10w40 Amsoil. As for the 1 quart in 1K miles, that seems a bit extreme to me. Not usre if that is normal for a stroker, but I would be a bit worried if it was my car.
I have been running castrol 20w50 and change it every 4-6 weeks...
keeps the motor clean, and is great for the bearings. the less contaminants in the motor the better, says my engine builder.
I'm currently running Mobil 1 0w-40 because I have read in numerous places about how much better the 0w is for cold start up and how fast it begins to pump. I have also heard that the German Castrol 0w-30 is supposed to be a superior oil...but it has to be the German stuff. I am waiting for the new 0 or 5w-50 that will be coming out shortly...I believe from Mobil 1 for the McClaren.
Did a lot of reading on Cracked Dino Oil vs. genuine Synthetic Oil...there are lot of interesting reads on it all over the internet. Stuck with Mobil 1 0w-40....but I have used Amsoil and Redline in the past....as for Royal Purple I have heard that it doesn't offer very good resistance to prolonged heat cycles...so being that I run twin turbos I stayed away from it.
