Default Please chime in...When is meth needed?

Im trying to avoid meth at all cost just do to the fact that is another expence and something else that can go wrong. And I would hate to blow a motor tuned for meth do to a pump faliure or bad hose or something. How much boost and how much horse power can I safely run/make with out meth? I live in utah and we have pleanty of 100+ days in the summer I know meth is specially nice on the hot summer days.

thanks in advanced...

Are you running a stock bottom end, what PSI and what octane do you have in your neck of the woods?

7-8 PSI on a stock bottom end.

What are you running or plan on running as we need more info to answer your question.

My setup with stock motor @ 9psi was OK for 92 pump gas, but I took it to 11psi and got a detonation problem. I wanted to keep the power without de-tuning. It was the easiest way for me to get there, and it does the trick very well. It allowed me to pick up 100rwhp!

I would say that meth is never "needed". It just allows you to be more aggressive with your tune for a particular combination. It can add a margin of safety or allow you to increase timing or boost without running into a detonation problem. If your original tune is on the conservative side to start with you should be just fine without it. If you later decide to push things farther you can add it like Chris did to allow for more power without other changes needed.
With the wide swings in temperature that you probably experience in Utah it might also help keep the intake charge cooler it the hot summer weather when you need it most.
The amount of boost and horsepower all depends on your engine and power adder. In 100* heat I would think that a fairly conservative guess would be 5-7 lbs as previously mentioned resulting in around 525-550 hp on a stock engine.

Default got meth?

It cools, it cleans and it raises octane. A little attention to make sure its running ok is a small price to pay for the insurance it provides.

100 octane fuel is 6 bucks or more a gallon. A gallon of windshield wash is 2 bucks at most. Where is the inconvenience?

I run straight meth that's about $5 a gallon. One gallon lasts a long time, because it's boost activated. On a street car that's best for me. 98% of the time is normal puttz driving where pump gas is fine. The 2% of the time I get to run WOT or at the track is where it does it's job. In my case, running a full tank of high octane would be a huge waste unless I'm spending a whole day on the track.

Its a bone stock 04 ls1 coupe, 60lb inj. sts kit, 7lbs, 91 octane, I would like to push it to 9lbs and not run meth if it is safe to do so.

Bone stock on 91 with 100+ degree days. I'd leave it @ 7 to be on the safe side even though your running 60lb inj. Do you know what your duty cycle is on the injectors @ 7 when it gets hot out aling what your IAT's are?

Better be safe than sorry.

Snow Performance's meth kit starts pumping meth at about 4 psi, so you wouldnt use much running 7 psi. If you run 9, the meth is invaluable for cleaning, cooling and raising octane. Its cheap insurance. STS will give you a safe tune that wont hurt the motor if the meth fails to spray.
