Default Maggie Intercooler

Well I finally did it. I took the front bumper off and fabbed in a fan forced oil cooler to replace the Magnusun Intercooler heat exchanger. I wanted to get more air to the radiator and make sure the blower still got the cooling it needed. I mounted the Oil cooler underneath the headlight assy on the passenger side. I put the fan on a relay that is triggered by the hot lead that runs the circulating pump for the intercooler. Then I ran a seperate hot lead to the relay that is switched from a toggle switch in the battery box.
With this switch I can run the pump and fan while the engine is off between rounds at the drags along with stuffing the resevoir with ice cube. I am now able to "chill" the intercooler between rounds and also scrub some of that heat that reside in the aluminun intake manifold.
Future plans call for an electric engine water pump that I would like to be able to run between rounds w/the radiator fans also.

While I was at it I spent the time to install the new gauge panel that Beer made for me...again! Thanks Jim!

Looks good. I'll be taking the nose off my car for some surgery shortly. Let us know what impact is has on your IAT's, coolant and oil temps.

I don't log so I will not have IAT's for you. The main objective was to free the path to the radiator and get my coolant temps back where they belong. Driving in stop and go traffic today along with some blasts my coolant temps were bordering around my thermostat temp 178-185 This is a marked improvement and I am happy. The right side brake duct in the bumper is the only new air the cooler gets and it keeps the intercooler water touchable.

Gerald, I removed the Maggie supplied intercooler altogether and it seems happy. If I had to I could put it back, behind the license plate and do the cutout trick along with venting around the fog lights. I just don't want to if I don't need to. Vette Magic will be the test, see ya there! At least the coolant temps are back to normal!

Restriction is one of the biggest issues with cooling. It would have been nice to get some baseline's to compare but it'll make the biggest difference when you need to keep it from heatsoaking. More alky should do the trick.

Arnel,
I don't have any alky or meth yet, perhaps later when I run more boost. On the stock block I don't want to exceed the 7 1/2 I have now. I have 142k mikles on it now and always race with my fingers crossed! Some day with a forged motor and bigger cam I will run meth injection. Not yet. See ya at Vette Magic?

Steve,

If your not logging IAT's then I would highly recommend running meth.... one or the other for some added safety or a sense of how things stand.

If not at least get the tune to recognize a high IAT situation and drop timing when it does. While it's getting modded get some IAT readings at WOT and how quickly it recovers.

did you put a screen in the line so that a small piece of ice cube does not kill your intercooler pump ?

It's been a while since I've had the maggie but if I remember correctly, those are about the same temps as the standard heat exchanger. Now put alky in there and watch what it does to the air temps.. better yet what it does to the power on those really hot days when heatsoak would've killed power

Make significant difference in cooling engine temps while retaining IC performance = Great mod!

I thought about it but the other night at the track it showed me that nothing was going to get out of that tank before melting! I need to put a tee in the hose and a vavle to drain the tank before filling with ice. The guy at the track wanted me to pull out of line to fill the tank with ice because the water was running across the staging lanes.
Back to the issue, the ice is too small or non existant before it gets out of the tank.
This sure paid off at the track, by the time i ran each time my coolant temps were down between 160 and 170 and the intercooler tank water was luke warm at best.
I am very happy I took this gioant obstruction out of the way of my radiator.
