Default STS kit question

has anyone ever heard of some just using the universal single turbo kit from STS on a C5?

would this work on a 01 ZO6? that would be the car it going on, I already have injectors and fuel pump on car so thats not an issue

I was thinking of this bc there is a huge price difference between the C5 kit and the universal kit

$2995 compared to around $7000

thanks in advance

I don't know exactly what's included in the 'universal' kit, but I've owned an STS C5... so I'll weigh in.

If you're going to buy a 'kit' that you have to actually cut/weld into the piping/etc, you might as well start from scratch. Snag a PT67 for $700-800, grab a 'knock-off' BOV and wastegate (they work well, surprisingly enough... and are dirt cheap), an oil-pump, vac-lines, oil-lines and fittings, a cheap I/C from 'that auction site,' and so on...

Basically, if you're going to attempt to build it, just build it from scratch. Why pay the mark-up fee that STS is going to charge you? They have to make money to keep the doors open that that 'mark up' fee is what you could avoid by doing your homework, acquiring the parts on your own. Unless I'm mistaken by the 'universal' kit, you'll have to do the same amount of work when building your system.

Also... whatever you think it's going to cost... add 50%... if not 100%. These things get out of hand

thanks for the input guys

but if I did decide to go with the universal kit would just that single t3/t4 turbo really do anything on my car?

or would I have to go with a bigger turbo regardless or go with the twin t3/t4 setup?

I would really like to keep in rear mounted

Why buy their universal kit? You can put one together yourself for the same in reality should be less money, plus you will still need to bend pipes and all that anyway to fit your vehicle so it may be counter productive somewhat. If you are thinking about buying the kit so you don't feel bad about asking how to size the turbo well just go on over to ls1tech.com. Those guys have been doing rear single mounts for awhile now and there is a huge amount of knowledge on the setups if you ask. Many guys started with the STS for the F bodies and most of them have hardly anything left from the original kit because it just didn't work very well. Zombie over there is running a single rear mount pushing about 900hp he claims through a single 2.5" exhaust to the turbo and of course it is wrapped exhaust. You should think about running a single 3" charge pipe because Air speed (feet per min) will start getting high with anything smaller if you start to push upwards of 50 lb/min of air. By the way 1lb/min = approx 10 HP and multiply cfm by 0.069 to get lb/min.

And by all means the electric scavenge pumps will work but why not run a single or dual scavenge pump for the oil return. You will want rear end style pump like they use on race to circulate and cool rear ends. If you need to buy an electric pump if you don't go with STS RB Racing sells them.

Again if you want a single go to LS1tech.com and ask for advice, good people there. If you want dual STS appears to use a stage 3 T3 turbine which is a 2.559" major and a 2.229" minor diameter turbine wheel. For compressor stay with the TO4E series compressors don't go to TO4B. The E's are much better with compressor efficiency and will give more room to grow if you decide you want more. The GT series turbo would be even better, and the best would probably be Borg Warner series turbo but they get expensive. A 50 or 54 trim E compressor would probably be a good choice if you want about 500 to 600 hp flywheel.

Anyway good luck with what ever you do, if I have enough funds I will be doing my own rear mount setup soon. I will be using a 2 stage dry sump pump driven off the motor since they are dead reliable, none of this electric stuff for me even though they have been reported to work very well. Also learn what you can about turbocharging and airflow requirements. By a book on turbocharging, it will be necessary. By the way this was a quick rundown feel free to ask more questions. And don't forget about the intercooler!

Oh yeah forgot to touch on A/R ratios. Again ask for advice on singles at LS1tech but for duals it is pretty obvious that STS supplies a 0.48 a/r for their twin setups with the stage 3 T3 turbine. I would imagine you would want about a 0.85 for single rear and maybe a 0.96 depending on which trim turbine you end up using.
