Default Do I need a multi disc convertor for my setup?

I'm currently running a Yank SS3600 convertor with my cam only setup and it works great. In a month or so, I'm going to have a Forged motor and F1C Procharger running around 18# of boost and was wondering will this convertor hold 750rwhp+?

Will I need a muti disc convertor? If so, then should I get the 3-disc or 5-disc? Maybe a PY3400 would also work???

I was looking on the RPM website and noticed between the 3-disc and 5-disc, its only a $100 difference. I'm just trying to decide which would be ideal for my setup. It would be great to keep my current convertor and save some cash, but since it's a single disc I'm not sure if that's possible or safe for my drivetrain.

Thanks in advance!

Depending on usage go with the triple disc for the street, five disc is race only.

As long as you only use the convertor lock while cruising you will be OK. If you want to run it locked under power, then you should run a multi-disc. But I found that at least on my 99, the ECU won't let it stay locked over 100mph. We tried to keep it locked on the dyno, and around 5000 rpm which is 100 mph it would unlock. We never could find a way around it to keep it locked.

You should be fine with the single disc!

I am running the Yank SS3200 and man does it hold, on the Dyno Charlie keeps it locked and as he was saying he was quite impressed with how well it held up

And I'll tell you that at the track this thing was awesome and outstanding, and of course it is the single disc LOCK-UP torque converter

Thanks,Matt (I also got your other response to my questions on the other post - Thanks for the kind words/explanation - you know what I be talkin' about )

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Matt,

Do you find your convertor flashing higher then the stated 3200? I have the 3600, so I'm thinking it might flash to like 4000 when in boost, I just hope it wont be too slugish around town... We'll see I guess as I'll run this for a while with my setup and get something else down the road if it doesn't workout.

Thanks!

No it doesn't! It is awesome around town and is not too loose!

If I could have it flash higher I would like it to do it only at the track

It seems to be spot on when I launch at the track with my MT ET Drag Radials I thought of the 3600 but thought it would be a bit much for my driving taste/style around town

Hope this helps some, but again mine is spot on when it flashes

Thanks,Matt

Hey bro, I run a 3200 Vig 5 disc lockup-same one I ran with my 347 when I ran 9.6. I might try out something new this season-so I might be selling this.

I went with the Vig because that's what Rodney recomended to me.

Arun, Put me first in line when you have it out your car. For now I'll just run what I have and see how it does. Just let me know bro!

Elvir,

Since Rodney is building your new tranny I would just take his advice as he is the tranny expert. Iwould think for your use of the car you would be fine be but Rodney is DA EXPERT (and tell him exactly what your planning, doing, etc.,and he will make sure your good to go)!

Hey Jimmy!

Yeah, Rodney definitely is the man when it comes to the drivetrain. I'll be getting in touch with him very soon as I'll be purchasing my Level VI tranny from him.

For everyones information. I called YANK and they highly recommended not to use the lock up under full power. You have to realize that is a lot of power going thru a tiny single disc clutch. And they will not warranty there convertor if you burn up your lock up disc from using it under full power. Just a warning.

Okay! I can't remember though, off the top of my head, will it Dyno higher or lower with the converter UN_LOCKED?

Mine was at 639 RWHP LOCKED - will it be lower or higher UN-LOCKED?

I remember seeing it somewhere I just can't remember where

Thanks,Matt

You get higher numbers with it locked on the dyno

Like others have said talk to Rodney. He told me if I wanted to lock the convertor at wot at the track then I would need the triple disk. We picked the 2800 stall because I put about 15000 miles a year on my car with 10k of it being stop and go traffic. I think this converter will stall up about 6-800 rpms higher than rated. The brand "f single disk I had was a 3200 stall and I blew right through it with only 614 rwhp, fyi.
