Custom Catback for FI

I am running a stock 99 ls1 with an ls6 intake and a TTiX turbo kit. I am currently in the 500-550 rwhp range and looking for a little extra. The car noticeably pulls harder from 5000 - 6000 rpm when I remove the Z06 Ti catback and run open pipes. The Ti is restrictive and it is something that is noticeable at this horsepower level.
This is a 3" muffler system that has borla quad tips. The 3" sizing is for flow and the quad tips are based on preference. I chose the Dynatech muffler because I have used it with success on other vehicles and wanted to see how it would work in this application.
15 - 30 hp probably isn't very noticeable when you have 800+ rwhp and I don't doubt that any 800 rwhp car could run 9's with even a honda muffler.
A follow up dyno will be done to see if anything was gained. This is a custom setup and posted to give others ideas and provide information.

Just for reference when I switched from the stock C5 exhaust on my 97 to the magnaflows that are pictured in my website. I made 313/332 rear hp/tq......on an otherwise completely stock LS1 engine. I have considered going back to that exhaust as it had a very exotic sound. But as with any mod you have to do what makes you happy and what you like...otherwise it ain't no fun.
So good luck...just want to share with you my experience switching back and forth between exhaust systems. I have tried the following on my cars.
Stock C5 & Z06 Ti
Corsa PRTs
Borla Stingers
Magnaflow Custom
Straight tubing with welded on 3" tips
Magnflow straight pipes (basically straight tubing)
All have been 2.5" systems on 346-347 cid motors. All have been at different hp levels both NA and FI'd.
But I have heard that the Z06 Ti exhaust becomes restrictive over 600 rwhp...but I have never seen a dyno sheet comparing the Ti exhaust to aftermarket of any kind back to back on the same car with the same mods. All that I have seen and been told is that there are FI'd cars running low 1/4's with Ti exhaust. So it made me question (like you) just how restrictive the Ti exhaust was/is????/

What radius is that J-Bend? Only challenge I see is getting it to fit, but I think you can make it work.
What program did you use for 3D modeling?
Keep us posted!

The radius is 5" on the j-bend and it will have a section cut out of the center in order to make the radius tighter.
I used Autocad to do the 3D modeling.

Starting point, no mufflers

Collector opened up to accept 3" pipe

Passenger side fabrication complete

PS installed

Rear View

It's louder than the Ti mufflers and a little bit louder than a magnaflow setup that I have personally heard. I would say that the sound is very pleasing in the car and slightly exotic at WOT.
i should have a video posted this evening and it's going to the dyno for a check-up tomorrow.

I give you a 10 for craftmanship, uniqueness, and inspiration...but I personally didn't like that sound on my car...simply because of resonation on the inside between 1500-2000 rpms. But as you can see I have had to try a lot of different exhaust...it is truly a personal choice.
Great job.

Great job.

I'm curious which exhaust system you ended up liking the best out of all of the ones that you have tried. I contemplated doing the Ti bypass but wasn't certain that it would give me the extra flow that I wanted.

It could be that I am getting old having recently past 40. With my FI'd setup I like a high flow cat or cat delete
with the Ti system. I can tell you maybe running a similiar highflow cat (or cat delete) because I can hear the impellers wind down...like you can with a Duramax or Powerstroke...you know these kids with their loud diesels and straight pipes...oh I have one of those too.
My favorite naturally aspirated setup was inspired by my Grandfather who was a CHP mechanic and told me back in the day they just ran the Cats and straight pipes on the old Dodges.
So I tried on my NA setups no cats and straight pipes (ungodly loud), then no cats and the magna flows (better) but best with the magna flows and high flow cats...because you can see straight through a magnaflow so all they are really doing is being a resonator for the straight pipe option.
For turbo setups it is a little trickier as the turbos act as a noise gate between the valve train and the exhaust tips....thinkin about how a header car sounds with straight pipes...you hear a lot of lope and valve train noises...actually sounds pretty cool...but the turbo impellers kind of chop that up.
If you want to hear what Borla Stingers sound like with my special high flow cats
click on the vid in my sig and you can hear what they sound like over 800 rwhp. What actually made me change the Borla Stingers is you hear the guy video taping (don't know him) make a comment like, "it sure doesn't sound like much"...assuming he is talking about the way it idles...and for some reason...the teenager stuck in me took (not quite offense to it) but that it should sound like more. So I then stuck the Magnaflow straight tubing with tips pipe and then it sounded really similiar to what you have...a little louder though because I had no resonator like you do.I am driving down the road one day (6 months ago) and some guy in a Big Ford pulls up to me giving me the bird and yelling...all I could see was his finger and hear him screaming...so I made the mistake of getting out of my car to confront him (once again the teenager in me) only to find out it was friend of mine....he was like Jesus Chr...you are throwing rocks all over my truck (I'm running 335 Toyo Proxes RA1s) and that thing just sounds nasty....I was willing to quiet the car but not sacrifice the traction I have fought so hard to find.
So after seeing some TTix cars run 9s and talking to Phil...I thought what the hell I will put back on the Ti exhaust. Now the car is nice and quiet and I can hear my navigation system and DVD playing at cruise...but it sounds really good up top when its "on the pipe" as we say in the two stroke dirt bike world...and if I lost 10 rwhp at the 9# boost setting it is nothing I have noticed.
I wish I had time to do some back to back testing on a dyno to see what the actual differences are between all three systems at the 9# setting..but it is not really that important to me as the car runs good, hauls azz, and doesn't attract every cop that drives by me or that is in the neighborhood.

I really liked the way the GHL's sounded on my car, but it always bothered me having a 3" x pipe and reducing down to 2.5" The GHL's have an exotic sound and are loud at wide open throttle.
I am a little different than some people on this forum, a lot of people like to be "stealth", but really....how stealth can you be driving around in a corvette anyway?
I really like loud exhaust, lopey cams, loud blow off valves and really loud superchargers. My "big 3" is quiter at idle than the GHL's were, which I kind of miss.

Thanks for the write up on all of your exhaust setups. You did a very good job on the description and based on what you said, I think we have similar tastes in exhaust sound.
I'm glad there is someone on here that has experience with a variety of systems.

I hear ya. Dyno and acceleration vids should be up this weekend.
I'm glad to share info with people and am even more impressed when the build their own stuff (mods) like you have done...think that it is really cool.
I need to share something with some folks (guys that have joined in the last few years) my name is not "Rod" but that is a cool name as a nickname....probably because it is the last 1/2 of Hot Rod...or could be something worse.

After making adjustments to get the fuel in line, the car picked up 38 hp and 20 tq.
The power gain was a combination of adding 2 shims to the WG's (0.5psi) and the new exhaust system.
I should have a drive by video this afternoon.
