Default STS Self Do'ers

So I figured this STS install would be pretty smooth sailing right? NO!!! I really wish that I could be part of the STS engineer team and design this thing myself. I'm an aircraft mechanic and it's kickin' my behind.

I noticed that the wastegates and the turbo gaskets came with 2 pair each. Is this in case you screw one up and you have a replacement or what? Also both the gaskets have a little raised edge on the inside, is that suppose to face the flange or the wastegate/turbo?

And when they say "make sure that there is 1 sealing ring on each side of the banjo hose fittings on the wastegate ports," are they referring to washers as sealing rings?

Sorry I can't help you since I had a shop install mine but if you need me to take any pictures for you I would be glad to help out. When you get it done it will be worth it. Good luck!

Yes, the washers go on each side. Kinda the same concept as a brake line banjo bolt. Its been quite some time since I did a STS so I dont remember on the gaskets.

2000BC, thank you for the gesture! I could really use some pictures of the bolts and nuts that hold the exhaust flange to the turbo. I don't see how it is possible to get the lock washer on the nut side considering 1...the pipe bends right over the bolt hole so i can barely get even the nut to screw onto the bolt let alone the lock washer too. And 2nd...the weld of the exhaust pipe onto the flange is so close to the bolt hole that if i screw down the nut it will be "hovering" above the flange instead of laying flat because of the weld. Again, thanks!!!

I'm wondering if i can grind down some of the weld to make those nuts lay flat....

Since I tinker with my turbos on a regular basis I can still remember what the install was like. Those gaskets that you are refering to must be the T-3 turbine housing gaskets that are rectangular in shape. I installed them with the raised bump side towards the exhaust pipe and they seem to work well like that. The raised bump is supposed to seal any imprefection so that would be on the exhaust flanged. The turbine housing is machined so it's much flatter.

The sealing rings (aluminum washers) are installed with one washer on each side of the banjo bolts.

running anything less than 8 psi is kinda worthless.

Thanks Scubanme, that's another question down. Do you happen to remember how it was attaching the turbine to the exhaust flange? Did the weld on the exhaust flange get in the way of tightening the nuts for you?
