Default APS TT, My turn

I installed the APS TT on my 01 Z06. At the same time, I changed over to an auto, installed a 347 forged engine (somewhere around 8.8 compression) and a built rear (from blownblueZ06). The cam is 336-346 durration with a 115 LS. Worked 317 heads. Had it dyno tuned to a 588 rwhp and around 579 tq., at 13.8 psi of boost. I know the APS system has the inlet problems. Knowing that, I still have my boost controller set to max. On the street, I have seen 15 to 16 psi of boost.

My question is, should I lower my boost to get more hp. This is for those of you that have gone through this experience already. My tuner is good at tuning but he tunes what I have when I bring it in there, so we have not experimented on the boost.

I forgot to mention, it was tuned at around 11.3-11.4 AFR without meth. I have the dual nozzle progessive meth kit installed, but did not use it during tuning. Also around 18* of timing. SD tuned.

Hi Ronnie,

I got confused when you stated "Should I lower my boost to get more HP". Is that what you were meaning to say.

That said, your boost will fluctuate with air temp. The cooler the weather gets, the more boost you will see due to greater air density. I would suspect your tuner built in a little margin of safety for air changes such as this. Also, your meth kit will most likely help remedy the extra couple psi you are seeing. I would suggest just keep an eye on your fuel pressure and AFR......and enjoy it.

Yes Chris, that is what I meant. Maybe I'm confuse also. Is the inlet problem that APS owners are not getting enough boost or that the higher boost is not good boost. Should I figure that more boost is good? My fuel pressure and AFR's are good all the way to 6500 rpms. I know each car is different and that the track will be the real answer. I hope I haven't confuse you more.

The inlet problem with the APS kit is that at higher boost levels, the turbos are creating more suction through the inlets, resulting in collapsing inlet hosings.

One thing I should mention is that I would recommend going back for another tune now that you have the meth installed. Your tuner should be able to tune in a "fail-safe" so that if the meth pump fails, then the motor will survive.

Shave your head to get the compression up, if you want more power or get some bigger turbos.

Im using stock 317 heads and base turbos. I think he just needs a retune to take advantage of the meth

Hi Chris, He has pretty low compression for the amount of boost he currently running. If he was running 18 or more I would agree with you. I'm sure he'll pick up some power with a retune+ meth.

I'm not sure what his goal is since he did not state one.

My goal is to get the most out of these turbos. I guess tuning is all I have unless I decide to pull the heads to lower the compression. Right now I have the boost but it is not getting the hp I thought it would with almost 14# boost on the dyno.

-up the compression. You should be closer to 9:8-1 then @ 8:8. on pump gas. Used to run more myself on weaker bottom ends then what you run.

I missed the part where he had 8.8 compression. Im running around 9.3.

You could try some different silicone hoses instead of the factory ones and see if that helps with the boost pressure.

elsewise shave the heads.

Ronnie - I was in your shoes a couple of years ago. Basically same motor, same compression. i bought into APS's bull that this kit was good for 20 lbs blah blah blah. Well as we all know, stock, it's not. but my motor, as yours, is built around running higher boost. Your gauge may say 15 or 16 but it's not the real deal, trust me. Even that 14, probably isn't really 14. Spend the 300 and have custom inlets made, it's what I did. Now I see 19 lbs plus and can feel the power gains as I change the dial. You need more boost to take advantage of the compression. The kit can do it with some tweeks and it will be well worth it. Meth is a must so it's good to see you have it. What fuel system are you running. Feel free to give me a call, 203 509 0154 and I will give you a couple tips on the inlets.

Thanks for the input Dan. I was following your build as you went along. I have had my kit that long also. First it and my engine got stolen and then it just took me a long time to do the engine, M12 to A4 swap and so on. Anyway I will give you a call to see what I need to do with the inlets. I was hoping someone would market them before I got to this point.

Thats what I would do. My previous motor was 8.92:1 CR, when I put in new bearings I reduced the HG thickness along with a .005" clean up on the heads (resurface). My CR is now 9.2:1.

My hp didn't change a whole lot...835 (8.9:1) to 850 (9.2:1) rear hp. That was at right around 18#s (if my guage is correct).

I am just running a 347cid with 243 heads opened up to 77cc, 224/224 cam. You can get 243 heads for pretty cheap these days.

Not sure why you are using such a big cam????? If you have it all opened up you may want to put in a smaller cam, 02 LS6 cam are cheap too.

I think a good target hp goal with 91 octane is right around 600 rwhp +/- 30. I have found running 335 Proxes that I can get good traction with less managing of my right foot.

I have never had to use Meth...only higher octane with the higher boost runs. At 9#s with 91 octane, I have made between 575-600 rwhp...at 8.9-9.2:1 CRs.

If you are using meth and higher boost then I would recommend as others have to get your tune redone based on using the meth injection.

I'm going to make the best out of what I have right now. Not planning on taking the engine apart until I have to. I'll do the compression and cam change next go around. I think SpeedyD has the answer to what I need with what I've got at this time. I'll have to keep the cam and compression suggestions in mind for next time.

I am running the RSI dual walbros for a fuel system. One pump running all the time and the other comes in with a boost hobbs switch. 60# injectors, after market fuel rails, and boost referenced fuel regulator.
