What does the air speed sensor (located right in front of the TB) actually do? Is it safe to leave this off? I have a new shiny A&A polished aluminum tube and I don't want to drill a hole in it to mount this goofy little sensor.
That's an intake air temp sensor not air speed sensor, but you have to have the sensor cause that will enable the PCM to pull some timing if the air charge gets to hot. Some one correct me if i am wrong please.

If you are speaking of the IAT sensor (intake air temp), you can mount it on the bottom side of the pipe so that it's more out of site.
Depends on what kind of power you want to make. If you don't have any plans on using meth get the LS6 MAF, it's bigger than a LS1 MAF I believe. ( 85mm ) Plus it's a much cleaner look. If meth is wanted or needed down the road you can always put the other one back on and drill your hole then. Just an option.
