Re: Vette vs Supra....Why is it.....?? (RanGer498)
super street posted info about 1100 hp supra. fine and dandy. kenny duttweiler builds pro street twin turbo small blocks in the 1800 HP range, and yes they cost upwards of 50K too.
my punk buick turbo makes 600 hp (for a little while anyway!!!). no question that the turbo cars are VERY stout, and you can use turbos and modern fuel injection/ECM controll to make stupid power out of these cars. the toyota stuff is build pretty solid, and the cars are very fast.
what I would like some help with is twin turbos for the older ZR1/LT5.
do any of you "turbo" fiends know of any tuners that would be up for a challenge??? I don't have 50K but I'm serious and several people would step up to build these if we could get some engineering support with the plumbing.
I've tinkered with turbo buicks since 87, and yes, turbo cars run REALLY fast.
the "darth vader" cars run deep in the 9's with punk v6s but the reliability is an issue over 700 hp, and last time I checked, turbo supras need some bottom end beefing around this level too. sure you can always make MORE power than that, question is "how long can you do it".
I need to maintain LT5 (thats 24 hour) reliability at 800 HP and I'll be happy. looking to do it for 20-30 K including 5K for a teardown to replace rods/pistons. many have told me it can't be done, so it's up to me to prove em wrong.
tia for any ideas. time for the "legend" to get twice blown. :smash:
If you take a stock supra TT and throw a HUGE single turbo on it and with no other mods boost it up to 30, yes, it will blow. heh...
If you take a stock vette and throw a HUGE single turbo on it and with no other mods boost it up to 30, yes, it too will blow. :)
If upgraded accordingly, either setup (supra turbo or vette turbo) will be both highly reliable and extremely powerful. Put in proper pistons, upgraded fuel system, reinforced valve springs and diff head/cams, you're pretty much good to go.
Re: Vette vs Supra....Why is it.....?? (RanGer498)
lol really let me go check my local toyota car dealer in america
oh yea your talking about a *** spec supra that has less power and is not sold in the us any longer since 1998 oh ok
True. I looked into buying a *** Supra here in New Zealand. Injectors and cams are different for a start. They aren't anywhere near as fast as the American version. Funnily enough they are plentiful here. Supras are probably as common as Corvettes are "over there". Weird how the world works eh? :D
Touque does seem to be about 100 less in this one.
1994 Supra, GReddy T78, HKS 272 cams, 865cc injectors x 6. Note that this was run on the LOW boost setting of 22psi, which is not in the maximum efficiency range of the T78 turbo, which really starts flowing between 25 and 32 psi.
Re: Vette vs Supra....Why is it.....?? (RanGer498)
?!?!?!? The Supra was only made for the Japanese market from 1999 to 2002. 1998 was the last year the car was exported. And June 2002 is when production stops for MKIV. So I'm not sure what your comment about the Supra not being made as of last year is supposed to mean.

PLEASE do your homework, the Supra stopped being exported (by Toyota) to Europe BEFORE it was stopped being sported to the US. From 1999 till now the Supra was only sold in Japan. The ones exported to Europe after that are black market cars.
Who gives a dam if someone likes a supra. As far as im concerned this is a vette board, and besides the supra is obsolite. Look how long ago it was designed. Look how porkey and fat it is. Its old technology from a country that in the recent past taxed cars based on engine size. That is why its turbo. I believe the law's are changed so some of the next *** performance cars will be V8. But in no way will they be more bang for the buck then the curent vette. And certainly not the C6. Why would anyone want to buy a used obsolite overweight japanese bubble mobile when they can have a brand new vette? Cant afford a vette you say? You must be pretty dam poor considering they are the cheapest real sports car in the USA. (Mustangs are pony cars, WRX's are econobox's). So get a clue. The supra is old hat. Maybe when they build a new one and bring it to the USA I will care about it. Even then it will probably be 20,000 more then a corvette with the same performance. You like obsolite performance car's? Fine. But there are some old american rust buckets that will dust off all real road driven imports. I wouldent want to drive them either. Obsolite is just out of style anyway you look at it.

As soon as I read this, I thought of putting this:
but now that I thought about it more, I really think it deserves this:
Re: Vette vs Supra....Why is it.....?? (1990bevile)
For the record when Supra came out in 1993 it performed better than the Vette (braking, acceleration and handling) for not much more money ($43K base price). As far as "old" technology, don't forget that the Supra has most of the "high tech" stuff the Vette has plus fixed calipers, DOHC, etc. The Vette also has some stuff the Supra doesn't have, but old tech the Supra is not.

Of course your above statement depends on what magazine you read. I for one, would prefer a '93 ZR-1 to a souped up Japper with *FOUR* seats.
Re: Vette vs Supra....Why is it.....?? (Sanctuary)
The ZR1 on average accelerated a little quicker but didn't handle as good or brake as good as the Supra (check pretty much any magazine article). Lets not forget that the ZR1 was a $70K car. I happen to like the ZR1 a lot as the LT5 is a sweet motor. As far as 4 seats, I really don't care about that, the back seat on my car was taken out when I redid the interior anyway, not that it slowed me down much on my 10.4 run on drag radials off bottle anyway:)
