Took my 98 C5 A4 with AA SC to the track tonight and ran constantly 12.3 @ 115. I have 2.73 gears and had a hell of a time getting the RPMs up quick. I am running stock tires too. How easy is it to change rear gear to 3.42s and what else should I consider. My car is at 500 RWHP and I want to get in the 11s. Any help?

Ok, I like you. You could have said "How hard".
What you need to do is buy a complete 3.42 rear.
A build rear would be the best (hardened shafts, etc)
If that's not in the budget, look in the C5 parts 4 sale section.
With sticky tires, you should at least install a driver side harden shaft.
You should also install a new torque converter while it's apart, something in the 3200-3600 range.

With that combo you should run 11.4's all day.
Thanks a lot I kind of knew that's what I need to do. If i just change to a 3.42 gear "how easy" is the work. I installed the SC kit myself but never have messed with trannys or diffs. How long do you think a stock A4 is going to hold up before I'm calling RPM transmissions?

[QUOTE=STL94LT1;1578407332]MPH seems really low for a 500 rwhp car.[/QUOTE
It was really hard to get it off the line. My best 1/8th mile time was 8.1 @ 95. Gearing is just too high I guess.

My A4 is right at 505rwhp and I run right around 7.5-6@97-98 (1.9 - 2.0 60') in the 1/8th with a stock converter on 3.42 gears.
I did run 12.1-2 @117-118 (8.0 1/8) with 50 less rwhp a while back. I expect to be real close to high 10's when I replace my converter.
I would not be suprised to see you drop close to a second on your 1/8 mile time with 3.42's, DR's and a nice converter.
I bought a 3 rib pullout from a Z for about 500 if I remember correctly. The R&R was 450. I installed my S/C as well, however dropping the cradle on jackstands seems like a pain in the azz. Not to mention 450 for the diff R&R sounded like a deal to me.
One more thing you will have to consider is that the 2.73 housing limits your gear choices. I think Motive makes a 3.90 with a thicker ring that will work in that housing, however I have heard it does not make the strongest setup.
