Are you inclined to DIY? I removed it myself, got new bearings from RPM transmissions, and paid NAPA to install them with a press. I got away with about $100 labor, which is rewarding!
On a related matter; Can you remove the entire DS from the TT, without unbolting the TT from the clutch? Assuming the trans is already gone, of course.

I've always had to knock on it to get it to come free, with one end closed(and still attached othe car) it would be...difficult.

By the time you get that far, it's only a few more bolts. Might as well just pull it the rest of the way out. It would be difficult because you don't have anything to get a good grip on to knock it back and it's a tight fit. I take the clip out and stand the assembly on end, lift it about one inch off the ground and let it go. The weight of the TT will pop the shaft out.
Of course the key is in the reason for the delay. Waiting on parts or did they put your car in the corner and ignore it for the last 2 months?
I'm just venting a little - They are not leaving anything questionable - they have found all the "left over" issues and had to order more parts but then another issue crops up and more delays - been through this cycle about three times now it does seem to taking FOREVER!!
If it had broke near home then I certainly would have entertained the notion of doing it myself - as it is - the car is about 500 miles from here!
I'm reminded again how important it is to have a shop you can trust to do the right thing and not just throw stuff in / and leave stuff that is questionable where you cant see it.
Like you guys know and have reminded me - doing it yourself leaves no questions if/when something goes wrong - you know if you installed it properly - or fudged on something!!
im saying screw it and buying a whole used tt assembly...500 shipped on ebay is what ive found courtesy of another member on here.i dont feel like rebuilding it and need o replace the short block anyway so thatll just make it easier when swapping everything
