I was talking with someone from Mallet at Bloomington Gold and he had told me that LPE was having alot of problems with the SC packages. Anyone hear this???? He said they were also having more problems doing the packages in Automatics vs Manuals as they are harder to program the computer for shift points???? Kinda makes me nervous, But also makes me think if he is blowing smoke.... Anyone know anything about this???
Well Im somewhat concerned, Because for one I REALLY want the LPE package and have signed the contract with them and two It REALLY concerns me that I also have an auto. I want this thing to perform on the money. I don't know if the guy from Mallet was blowing smoke trying to get me to change my mind and go with them or if LPE is having problems. Thats why I'm asking up here if anyone has heard this? The other suprising thing the guy from Mallet said which shocked me, was when I asked how much for them to do the same work, He told me they would not attempt it on an Auto!!!! So that raised the red flag of this guy wasn't really after my business....
So PLEASE if anyone has gotten their car back from LPE with an Automatic SC package, POST YOUR RESULTS AND OPINIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not trying to bash LPE or cry wolf in ANY way!!!!, I just want the facts before throwing down or throwing away $13,500 for mods from them!!!!!!!!
BAD NEWS TRAVELS FAST TRUE OR FALSE!!!I install ATI and the 1st installs are the hardest,I can assure you LPE being the potential for the single LARGEST installer of this unit Magnason would have there entire c5 design team working hand in hand with Graham who not only has 20years of tunning in his blood he has his Doctorate in engineering, designed the ZR1 valve train with his right arm tied behind his back,he was also out on loan to GM to design a head were all familiar with LS6 and of course him and John designed the Turbo packages from the ground up.
If there are honeymoon problems which I doubt because knowing this team all the tunning fuel delivery what ever needed work was tested and proved with many Dyno/computer tuning runs on top of the fact I would guess they probably have 1 or2 test mules with 5000+ miles of hard driving and once perfected John will do anything he can think of to make it fail/throw codes/misfire etc...
So even though they are direct Blower competition and we love these simple compact and efficient units the only problems we are experiencing is occasional lean conditions and mods to fuel delivery as well as all 'round tunning issues but that comes with the job and all our techs lately are happy when we get a 383 NA stroker, the exotic has become every day and if LPE installs it it will run and deliver as promissed, dont worry being in the 1st 10 or so you may be laid up for a while but when you get it it will be better than the original units promises as are our XTREME installs we outdo the factory.Good Luck,Dave S.
I find it funny that Mallett claimed they would never SC an auto when last year at Carlisle I saw a 427 SC with an auto done by Mallett. I think there was an article in Motor Trend about this same car also. They have a different setup that lays the radiator flat and costs a ton of money. I know Mallett makes really nice cars, but when it comes to getting the power to the pavement, I think Lingenfelter has them all beat. I will be ordering one of the Lingenfelter/Magnuson SC's next year. Programming seems to be a big deal when every SC comes out. I'm not worried, Lingenfelter will have it taken care of. :yesnod:
I agree with all of you that they will fix the problem if it indeed exists. I think Mallet was blowing smoke myself. They had 4 cars at Bloomington that all ranged $20,000+. They did have the 427 with the side mount radiator also.

Its not that they wont SC an auto... its that they wont SC any car with stock pistons and such ... the 427 has all premium parts so the SC is more reliable ... they make killer cars ... but are very strict on what they do since they warranty all of their work .. even with only 475 Crank HP ... they do a automatic rebuild ... and I know of tons of you guys with 400+RWHP on the stock tranny ...
i think the only problem with the LPE SC is that i dont have one.
o wait i dont have a vette either.
im sorry my post has nothing to do with the thread but i wanted to compliment you on that pic. the car looks great with the yellow and chrome z06 rims
Have no fear. LPE is NOT in to putting out cars that are un-reliable. That is John's biggest priority next to it performing well. If it isn't right...He won't let it leave.
Thanks for the all the feedback on this. I will take what Chuck Mallet said with a grain of salt and I'm still gonna go ahead and get it done by LPE!!! Who knows maybe I will stop by Mallet on the way back home and take him for a spin.. :D
Now for some first hand info:
As posted elsewhere:
I have a C5 A4 2002 with the Eaton Blower from LPE. We got it on the Street last week. Our result was not very impressive 360RWHP and we dont think that the timimg is advancing enough, I have heard some detonation, at low RPM and lugging, dont know why. The tunning guys had just done a M6 C5 and it got to 425RWHP. We think that there is another 50 HP to find with the correct tunning.
Had one issue when I was horsing around and the computer went into reduced power and RPM limited, and had an error in the Traction control. After a couple of restarts the computer reset and All Systems are now normal. LPE suggested that this is expected given all the shut down detection between the throttle position and RPM, The computer most likely thought it was in a run away mode and called it quits. LPE thinks they will need 3 or 4 more installs before they want mail out the computer recipe.
The good news is that the car is wonderful to drive. Im even smiling in my sleep.
It sounds stock at idle and when cruising. At 1500 RPM in 2nd the acceleration is breath taking. On the Dyno at WOT we closed the door because of the noise. I took it down an industrial street at WOT and on the second pass we needed stands for all the people that came out to watch. :yesnod:
My car gets dropped off this week for the Magnuson install. Holly and Tim both said the A4 programing is completed. No problem whatsoever! I would take Mallets comments as a competitor loosing out on the hottest mod going right now! Just my 2 cents worth.
I have a 2000 C5 (6 speed) and the the install weekend before last. The programming for mine is fine, but haven't made it to a dyno yet. I got it about 6 weeks ago and know they were still working out the details on the auto's. They aren't going to let you out the door unless it's perfect. They will take at least 2 weeks longer than they tell you when you drop it off (that's been my experience with anything Tim says) but it will be perfect.
