Default Traction: Wider vs Stickier

Currently I am running Nitto Invo 305/19 in the rear at 660rwhp. Traction can be nonexistent at times. In an effor for better traction on the street and track (I rarely visit the track), what is the best way forward?

Wider? (Mini tube/wide fender, wider wheel, wider invo tires)
Or
Stickier? (New Nitto NT05R 305/19)

Taller (more sidewall) and stickier...wider won't help much in a straight line.

If you aren't worried about turning a low '60 at the track and just want it to do better on the street the nitto is your cheapest/best option in a 19" I think unless someone else has stepped up with a 19" drag radial since I looked last.

Mickey Thompson has came out with a 19" drag radial as well.

More sidewall is the ticket for traction on these cars.

For your power level, the M/T ET Street II would work really well.

I have NT05Rs 345/30/19s, I didn't know they made a 305/35/19, must be new.

The NT05Rs are pretty good on the street, I'm as happy as I can be!

and an Invo is a harder compound than the NT05. 260TW vs. 200TW
i do understand that the NT05s can start to get a little greasy on corners when they're hot, though. i've heard good stuff on the RE-11s (i believe there's some that size) and they're a little stickier than the 05s at 180TW without going to a R-comp. pricier, though

why do people just default to 1/4mi thinking? i never understood that...
but it's true - i've seen some guys cut crazy times on a 275 drag tire mounted on 17s

it's just when 4 out of 5 times, somebody's shoving 1/4mi numbers down peoples' throats, you just get used to it, i reckon

Because 99% of people in the FI section do some kind of straight line racing (1/4, half mile, mile, mexico)

Understand that? Or should I be giving him info on what the best tires for the snow are in case he decides to drive his car to Alaska...or maybe he is thinking of turning it into a rock crawler...I could recommend tires for that too

Most of us do some kind of racing or spirited driving as it is called here

I have a couple friends using the 345/19 nt05r and they are very happy with them

Why don't you go troll elsewhere?

Sidewall is better for traction no matter where you are. If you don't understand that, then please sell your Vette and get a Prius.

well... he wouldn't be the first and i'm pretty sure some of these guys make more power than a lot of us

but then again, they should probably be drawn & quartered for not using theirs as a drag car instead

and i seem to remember how the last big 99% movement made some people look

or rather, you could try climbing off your high horse - sounds like you might've sat on the saddle horn.

if you don't understand that tire companies make certain variations of their race tires based on whether or not you're going straight or turning, then you're the one who needs to stop giving tire advise.
you actually are correct in saying "Sidewall is better for traction no matter where you are." that's probably the most generic way to say what we assume you mean, but it's true nonetheless.

a taller softer sidewall helps absorb some of the torque of launching the 1/4mi or gunning it down an open stretch of interstate, however in keeping with your statement, a shorter stiffer sidewall keeps your weight more centered over the contact patch during high-g cornering. simple example: look at the Nitto 555R (for drag racing) and 555R2 (for road racing). they're roughly the same tire except the R2 has reinforced sidewalls.

let's all think for a second... do you see many people getting their best 60' times on stiff low-aspect tires? of course not. in that same respect, do you see anybody getting good lap times with 28" tires on 17" wheels? of course not.

i don't know why people are getting their panties all in a bunch because i mention non-drag tires to somebody who never even specified what kind of racing he does (yet the guy before me somehow suggested road race tires and nobody made a peep about them). on top of that, he even specifically stated that he rarely visits the track (again - no mention of drag strip, circuit, etc), and i'm 100% certain that he can't leave his house, get somewhere where he can haul the mail, and go back home without at some point encountering some turns. in case you can't tell by the threads people post about on/off ramps, mountain/canyon drives, etc, corners are also fun in these cars. i understand OK City ain't the most hilly or curvy place, but considering there's at least 4 major road courses within 7hrs, it's possible he could be part of the 1% that prefers lateral fun. maybe y'all should be the ones who need to stop assuming...

even based on him being in the FI section claiming 660rwhp and having a pic with a stock hood (indicating a belt-blower), that ain't even a conclusive result because i've actually seen quite a few centri cars who turn the wheel when they go fast.

and regarding the snide Prius comment... please
i would've rolled a Prius driving it the way i do my car

I'm gonna try a set of these next I think for my daily driving tires.. They have decent reviews and are only $250 a tire.. Cheaper then Nitto 555r and probably hook better.

I have yet to go back to the dyno....but after doing Arun's jam cam my Toyo TQ are worthless unless they are warm, it's warm outside and I'm in 3rd gear +

I suggest Mickey Thompson ET Street II if you need a stockish sized tire
