Default how many seasons from your rpm 4L60?

Lost the 3/4 today, no fun driving home in 2nd gear. As good as they are, I only get a couple seasons from them, and I don't race all that much. I have a level 6/7, with 2 coolers to keep the temps under 200. I will probably just rebuild it, but these don't seem to holdup to 800hp range very long.

Which is why I'll make my couple passes and just enjoy cruising with it. If I can ever get it installed.

It looks like you can get a good 3-4 clutch pack for about $100. At this rate I'll learn how to replace them. It doesn't look that tough. Watch this video even a 3 year old can do it.

I've rebuilt several 700R4's and one 4T60. I had a friend show me how to do one and then bought a book to assist. It really is not that hard. You do need a couple of tools but local trans shop will have them and may loan them to you. Local shop was shocked and impressed that I was doing the 4T60 they let me borrow all the tools. There is a spring compressor and a Teflon seal install tube and resize/shrinker. Those were the only ones I needed and the compressor I could have improvised. Good luck in figuring it out.

Well dame if a 3 yr old can do it so can you.GL If you do decide to take it on yourself try to film the progress as you go so inquiring minds want to know.

How often do you punch it on the street and it downshifts from 4th to 3rd or 4th to 2nd?

Got a new clutch pack on the way. I never kick it down from 4th, always pull it down to 3 before laying on it.

Did you order it from RPM?

So what ruins on the actual clutches? Is it not possible to use a better material?

Right I tried and they won't sell em. I ordered some from 700r4l60e.com. It appears to be the design of the 4L60, and you can only do so much with it. There are several flavors of clutch packs with varied friction/steel combinations. I'll have it out this weekend and post what I find.

May find that it's time for a powerglide.

I got about 3 (hard) seasons out of my RPM Level 6 A4 before it started to slip. So I had RPM install their level 7 with their best parts...We'll see how this holds up to the abuse. Only have about 500 miles on it so far, but should see some track time soon. I'm at ~800rwhp

Powerglide sounds like a great option someday. Although it was a 10k+ conversion last I checked. (Same with the 4L80 and TH400) After I win the lottery, I'll do that and cage it up with a chute.

Chatting with a local performance builder, he suggests at this level to "freshen" it up every year to keep it going.

Well time to go get wrenching...

You may have broke something inside if it was working fine and no slippage and you all the sudden lost 3rd and 4th.

If the clutches let go with signs of slippage, then it could have been from lack of pressure. Which could be a bad pump, or a seal let go, or a sticky valve body.

Freshen means just rebuild the soft parts like clutches and seals, because the hard parts are fine.

Hey black98c5, did you get the new Sonnax drum they offer?

I hope it's as easy as this guy makes it look. Check out the first 2mins.
