It is a pinging sound caused by pre-ignition. The PCM's knock retard is surpose to retard the timing to prevent it when it is detected. If you have the problem on a TT car you sure need to see to it quickly or bye bye engine. Hope this helps.

Like someone knocking on your door or banging a pipe around under the hood, but some types cannot be heard at all. Your best bet is to prevent it by getting a safe tune done with good a/f and non aggressive timing. Also, run the highest octane gas you can when running the car hard.
