Searched the archives and found nothing... so here comes another semi-newbie question:
It appears from the posts that nearly all superchargers added by Forum members have been put on 6-speeds... rarely if ever put on automatics. Other than the fact that most folks looking for top performance would tend to buy Z06s and regular C5 6-speeds anyway, is there any particular reason why I should not consider not putting a supercharger on my 1998 automatic???
Thanks in advance for any and all replies! :) :) :)
Mine is going in as we speak. The only thing you might want to keep in mind is that all that extra torque is going to kill your tranny. I killed mine with just heads/cam and bold ons.

Oh man... not good at all! :( :( :( I have become very attached to that tranny thingy!!! Not sure the car would run very well without it!!! So much for my supercharger...
Yep, kiss your tranny goodby... For around 2K you can get a Level IV FLP Tranny that will withstand the power. I ordered one and am installing it along with the Procharger.

What can the stock automatic take in terms of power boost? What if I run the ProCharger with only 5 pounds of boost? Still too much?
Five or six grand I can almost justify! :D :D :D Seven or eight grand starts getting a bit painful!!! :cry :cry :cry
This is first hand experience.
I just completed my A4 C5 2002 with a Magnuson Blower.
I have not driven a M6 C5 with a Blower.
The context is handling.
For me the A4 is a better solution for a Blower.
1. the automatic will never let the engine lug.
2. The transfer of power is smooth and uninterupted.
3. I'm
4. Mr. Lingenfelter also says
The problem is that there are'nt more than a handful of warm bodies on the planet that know how to tune it. LS1_Edit :nonod:
The A4 transmission requires more tuning than the engine. How many tuners out there have this experience?
If you dont have the RIGHT guy do the tuning, forget it, dont do it.
When the right guy tunes it, then all those stock Vipers and Z06's, turboed Black Forest guys etc.. and worries will be behind you.
The result is that this is a beautifully handling car, well behaved at any RPM, power comes on right from the idle. Absolutely no power surge do to RPM !!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is a Car that my wife uses to pickup the kids and get groceries with.
Mine is an A4 with a 3.15 rear differential. I am eventually planning on an FLP level IV tranny. So far, I have had no isuues with the stock tranny. I have pushed it very hard many times.
A supercharger is fine for an auto. BUT You have to do your trans.
I have vortech 1999 auto. FLP trans Jeff at PTC did the work, along with
2400 protorque and 3.42 gears. Supercharger was on for one year
before trans was done and the third gear is the weak leak!
But if you do it right supercharger, trans, on the auto it rocks!
Good Luck Jimmy O
In fact lingenfelter twinturbos 427 800 hp is an auto
seen it at mid america show

Yeah... it is all about finances when it comes to this high mileage 1998 of mine. I can't afford to "over improve" this car... or I will never be able to move up to a newer one... preferably a Z06. The bottom line is that I can afford & justify a basic low-end supercharger... but I can't start tearing the transmission out. This would not be a good thing... nor a wise financial decision. But beyond the cost of components, I live in an area that seems to be totally devoid of top-shelf Corvette shops and mechanics. The ones I have found so far I would not even trust to change my oil.
I think you'd be ok with a 5lb Procharger or Magnuson. That said, I have the FLP L4.
Yikes!!! If I lived in a house like that, I'd have one too!!! :yesnod:  :yesnod:  :yesnod:
Just kidding you Tom. I may yet do it (i.e., buy the ProCharger w/5 lb set-up and pray hard that I don't destroy the stock tranny), but I think I'll likely pass for now based on some of the other "issues" being knocked about... and pending me finding a C5 shop/mechanic in Massachusetts that I can really trust.
I think that an auto is the best way to go. It would be easier to drive under WOT. Its frustrateing to have all that H.P. & cant use it effectively trying to get traction & keep it of the rev limiter. Thats why you read on this forum six speed cars that turn great MPH & run only high 11 second E.T.'s
I have had mine for about 2-3 months . 98 Conv. with auto, did switch to 3:15 gears, dont even know why GM would put 2:73 in a Vette, DUUUH its a sports car. well, runs great nice to have both hands on the wheel when it hits second. lots of wheel spin, Runcraps suck. but pulls like a scalded dog. no stall at the moment but if you want ultimate 1/4 mi times. you should go at least 3:42 with stall, and great tires. the level V trans sounds great but i will wait until mine is toat. with the supercharger you will want to keep the RPMs up so gears are amust. will keep you post sofar 480's Hp and 440 torq. need LS1 edit and a good Dyno to fine tune it for all the power, We just got the Dyno up and running. if you need tuning or install work around East Texas drop us aline . Doc's Dyno 903-729-3004 ask for Monty.
