Of course...none of us have seen the plug, nor what damaged was caused to it.
But as he has already said the tuner said it was "pinging"...it's fairly obvious the damage has been caused by that...of course why the tuner got into a scenario where there was detonation is another matter....and for how long this was happening.
I got the worst call ever from my shop today. They were tuning my C5 (45k miles) on the dyno after an A&A SC kit install. Tuner had 3 runs in and no problems. Then on the 4th, he noticed knocking. He said he knew immediately something was wrong. They diagnosed the noise coming from the #1 cylinder.
Did this tuner just use logging software (such as EFILive or HPTuners) or did he actually listen the engine using knock headphones during WOT runs?
From my exp with a GEN 1 SBC, I would be so bold to say a ringland gave up. Perhaps your heads will be damaged, like someone hit it with a shotgun. It might have gone into the intake and into the other cylinders. Also, my Exp, my cylinder bores looked perfect. So hope for that good news.
Make sure the clean out the intake manifold, as I found all sorts of small pieces of ringland in there.
I wish we had a picture of the spark plug. That was the first thing I saw when I pulled it and thought, whatever waits for me inside is going to be a big deal. It was
I lost oil pressure on an LS6, rod knock on #7, spun a rod bearing, also lack of oil pressure took out the cam and lifters. No internal damage in the cylinders. It has a forged bottom end new cam and a T-trim on it now.
An original unopened longblock with 100k miles (such as L33 or similar 5.3L variants) is more likely to last to 200k than a built forged internal engine under most common circumstances. If the goal is a mere 600rwhp~ mustang dyno I think that would be an option for sure.
A little update on the blown engine. It was def blown, no real evidence of anything except a striation running up and down the cylinder wall, also visible from the outside of the block, as well.
Here is the good stuff. So, the tuner was mortified this happened on his watch. He provided me a new engine. The only thing he asked me to cover was a gasket he didn’t have on hand and fluids. Charged me 6 hours for what I know was 40+ without a doubt.
I don’t think I will ever know what caused the failure but nevertheless I have it back and it’s running strong. It’s only at 8 lbs of boost currently. They increased the fuel a little to keep the cylinders cool so that I don’t blow it up again and they adjusted the idle to run a little higher. Took it out today for the first time and whoa. Big ole fat difference. I know it’s not but it seems to have endless go from my first round of mods to now.
Sounds like a good guy to deal with. Not many places would have taken care of the engine like that. I hope to have my car back soon making just shy of double your power.

Holy hell. Double? Good luck, be safe and have fun.
Is this through an auto? I just thought that the drivetrain loss in the chart was high (18%).
As for the the 5500 rpm mark - thats approx where the stock MAF is pegging if you don't start to compensate (rape PE??) in the tune, at least it was on my car (making just north of your numbers from a M6).
