They are referring to the number of nitrous stages. EX, stage 1 = 200hp, stage 2 = 150hp. I would say most here will have a single stage plate kit with around 100 to 150 HP.

So if a racer says they have 3 kits. Are they stacking them on top of each other? Say stage 1=100 2=100 3=200. That would be a total of 400 when they are all on?

yes, they're stacking them, having them activate at different times during the race, typically for traction reasons and/or grudge racing. like they'll leave the line on a 100, then add the rest if/when traction allows it.

Its also common to combine 2 kits for a third stage. IE 100+200+then 300 with both on. using a plate and fogger, etc.
Most of the time it starts lower and builds up once its rolling so as not toblow the tires off.

I've met a few people with progressive controllers. I thought about them myself but heard they are much harder on the solenoids.

They are, depending on how they are set up and how much they are used.Especially on the N20 sideEssentially "Chatters the solenoid.. You have to run a secondary solinoid on each side as a safety

But for the tunability and control it affords, its worth chaging them out more frequently
