The oil supply line runs from a small adapter that sandwiches in at oil presure sender. No big deal. I have not done any more install, got burnt out. I want to enjoy this. I will start again Friday night, then hopefully finish install Saturday. I will then do gauges Sunday, pillar mounted boost and fuel presure. I think I am on the downhill run. I will have programing done Monday if all goes well. :D
The oil pressure sender on top of the motor behind the intake manifold?
The place where you pick up the oil feed is above where the oil filter mounts. I have a billet relocation adapter there to feed my remote oil filter and cooler.
I have not made any more progress. I was at the SEMA show and just got back this evening. Vortech shipped some of the missing stuff and it arrived while I was gone. Unfortunately they did not sent the rotabroach and I can't progress beyond step 2 with out that.
Weekend two update. I had a few more problems this weekend that slowed me down. Let me first say that I am enjoying the install even though it may sound like I am working too hard. Carroll Supercharging Company listed install time for their Vortech kit at 40 hours (40 * $75). That kit uses water injection and looks easier to do. I am at around hour 32. If you have a good attitude, some tools including air tools, and willing to buy the ones you don’t have (pullers etc.) you can do it yourself. Another benefit is if anything ever goes wrong or needs updating you can do that as well. Make sure you use mechanics gloves or your hands will get diced up from sharp metal and burs while working. I got a bit faint yesterday after watching blood pump out of one of my fingers. When installing the new supercharger bracket you need to mount the power steering pump onto the bracket first. After the bracket is mounted you need to press on the pulley. This process took me most of the day Saturday. One of the three bolts that hold the bracket to the head is behind the low side return on the pump. You need to work it in by hand as far as possible, use some oil on the threads to help ease it in. After it is snug and the other bolts are snug you will need to use a narrow 16MM open end to tighten it. This is covered in the directions. I had to grind my 16MM down further to get it on the bolt. Then you will need to press the pulley onto the pump. I had to shorten my pulley installation bolt to get past the ABS module even after moving it as far as the lines would allow. This process was not easy as I was afraid to damage the plastic pulley or the shaft. When installing the new injectors make sure to seat them into the intake all the way. It is not as critical to get all the way up into the fuel rails with the O-rings because there is more leeway at that point. When you get to this point you will see. Also make sure to get all the old O rings out of the fuel rail, a couple of mine stayed in after I removed the injector. Next was mounting the reservoir, overflow and radiator. I have found a problem in the kit; it only supplied straight ½ to hose connectors even though the directions require 6 90-degree ½ pipes to hose. Like a fool I went to the hardware store and got 1 fitting. Then I went back and got 2 more, then I went back and they were out so I drove around to get the other 3. I spent $35 on fittings and two hours driving back and forth. NOT COOL. The next challenge was installing the intercooler. The instructions say it will slide in-between the radiator and the newly installed alternator assembly. No way would it fit. I ended up taking about ½ inch of the fan shroud and three supports. When you get to this point you will see. I remember this trick from when I installed my turbo on my LT1 Trans Am. I stopped working when I discovered that I would have to redo my trans cooler install. The instructions say to cut the metal hose at the radiator and attach hose to it. I was hoping that my custom AN and stainless line setup would clear. No luck, I will have to redo my lines. I don’t like to use rubber hose and clamps. The install is also taking longer because I like to soldier and use shrink tube on all my electrical lines. I also ran my fuel pressure and boost gauge wiring and hookups today. The electrical today was wiring up the water pump for the intercooler. I still have a positive attitude on the kit and now will spend next weekend again. Will hopefully finish. I still need 1 more 90 ½ “ fittings for cooler. I need to mount it and then install the supercharger. I feel like I am almost done but don’t want to rush or stress out.
Thanks for the update. There are lots of good tips in there. Did you happen to take any pictures of the of the mods necessary to the fan shroud to get the aftercooler to fit?
The rotabroach bit that Vortech sent showed up yesterday so I'll finally be working on mine in a within couple of days. I believe that I now have a complete kit.
Was your intercooler clearance problem because you are using an aluminum radiator? That's one thing that concerened me when i saw the picture of the Z06 installation and saw how close it fit.
I am using the stock radiator at this point. I don’t think the clearance will be different with a Stay Cool or other aluminum radiator. I had a Stay Cool on my Trans Am. The depth is the same just more material in the same space. I set up oil and trans coolers up front in the air ducks around the fog lights so cooling is not a problem. The mod on the fan shroud is very simple. Just take off about ½” of material and three supports. When I say supports I mean the ribs that hold the motor in. There is still 7 or 8 left after you remove 3. When you go to mount the after cooler you will see where to remove material. I actually have extra room at this point. I feel confident that I will be done this week. Anyone that’s doing the install can call me if you need help. Shoot me e-mail. :D
I have another question. What tool did you finally end up using to get the power steering pulley off? What tool did you use to get it back on? If you have a manufacturer and part number for what works that would be great.
OEM (brand, Autozone)Pulley puller and installer kit. Part # 25298. If the pulley gives you any problems getting it off you may want to take it to a alternator shop or machine shop and have it removed. I butched up my pulley and had to buy a new one. :nono:
SteveL2; 2 Qs: 1. how did you set up to drill and pin the damper?? 2. Did you use the factory damper or after mkt unit?? Thanks for the heads up on the install. I am looking towards installing one in the very NEAR future my self. :flag
IM's still aren't working. andy, you have mail! how much would a '97 kit run? and are they available? I tried looking on your website but couldn't find it.
Bill -- I'm flattered, but it's not me doing this, it's "Steve'01." He has much more courage doing this as a pioneer, whereas I've been watching in this thread to see how many scary things might keep me from trying it myself. :cry Anyhow, I hope Steve'01 will answer your questions, and I'll add to them:
1. when you're "taking off" material like on the shroud, what tool are you using?
2. also, what tool did you use to grind down an open end wrench?
Need a favor please. Went to bolt the supercharger on the bracket tonight. The boltholes on the supercharger do not line up with the holes on the mounting bracket. There are three on the engine side along the head that match. There is one down low next to the power steering pump reservoir. This is the one that won’t line up. It appears that the supercharger it hitting the lower bracket. The bracket is machined in a couple of places to exactly match the round of the supercharger. One section is for the power steering pulley and the other is for the SC case. The case is where it is hitting. I used some clay and found the spot. Can someone do me a favor and take your bracket and supercharger and try to bolt them together out of the car just to see if they line up. I will call Vortech and Andy tomorrow. I already removed a high spot on the bracket but will need more work to make it fit. I hope we are not going down Procharger territory. I called Vortech today and they know about the 5 missing 90-degree ½ pipe to ¾ hose barb. They said that there was an error in packaging. I tried to tell them about the necessary mod on the fan shroud but they did not seem interested. I will be a bit more forceful when I call tomorrow, I installed the after cooler and got my trans cooler hooked up. I was thinking that I would see supercharger installed tonight. No such luck. If I can’t remove enough material to make it fit I may be able to enlarge the bracket hole enough to get it to line up. I don’t like this idea as much as removing material because I may have belt problems. I am hoping Vortech knows about the problem and can tell me where exactly to grind.
Sorry guys I did not see the second page of posts. The kit has the drill bits, pins and template to pin your damper. This kit puts four pins into the crank that basically attach the crank, balancer and washer together. Remember to pull your rack don’t try to move it up like the directions say. Next question was on the removal of material on the fan shroud, I used a rototool with a cutting bit (like a drill bit) it is easy to maneuver in tight spots. I did not want to remove the shroud. On the 16MM wrench I used my grinder to make the boxed end narrow and thin. I torqued the other three bolts to 35lbs and hand tightened the hard bolt behind the hose.
