well,my gauges in the ac vent project is well underway(read I've got the car tore all to hell).things are going in the right direction.my question is: does anyone know where to tie the lighting wires into the panel lights?maybe to the radio illumination? any help would be greatly appreciated.....Tom
The easiest access point I have found is the traction control button lighting. Just lift the console door and lift up on that panel with the button. There is a problem though, the circuit will get cut if you pull to much power from it (mine worked for a while, but would then cut off). I finally just took off the light for the traction control and my gauges have since worked fine with it.
All of the dash lights are actually pulsed at a very high rate; it is not controlled with voltage. Not really sure how it works, but it is able to see that more amps are being drawn than should be. The beast solution is to pull power from a clean source, but use the ac lights/trac control wires along with a transistor of some sort.
The remote wire in the wiring harness to the radio will give you power. You will have to figure which one it is though. If you do this the gauge light will stay on continuosly or just when lights are on. Not sure on that.
My gauge lights are wired directly into the fuse panel because of the above mentioned modulated ground in the dash lighting. When the ignition is on the lights are on. I'm planning on adding a switch underneath the lower gauge of the pillar pod when I get the car out this Spring.
There is a wire on the radio connector that is connected to the dimmer circuit, I believe it is yellow on the upper left of the connector. I tapped into it for my pod gauges. I also, changed the incandecent lamps to blue LEDs and added some UV LEDs to get the needle to stand out better. I got somed of these ideas from another forum member. I did search but didn't the exact post.
