To those boosted (supercharged specifically) or anyone that could chime in, currently 04 z06 and getting ready to put in my TSP 228/232 .600/.600 cam in (with stock heads and full exhaust) i was just wondering for the down the road purposes. Should I stay with this cam or switch to something else now? The car is mainly a weekend cruiser/ canyon car/ autox with a few track days here and there. Thanks in advance guys
I don't have that cam, nor am I boosted but, that seems like a fairly modest camshaft. I think what you would want to consider is the LSA more than those specific specs. Don't get me wrong, those are obviously important metrics to look at but, if you have a tight LSA, that could impact the performance of your vehicle under boost.
Evening! I have an LS1 with the track weapon cam from Cam Motion. Lumpy as all get out but makes wild power.
12 pounds of boost through my ProCharger. 1 7/8 headers, 3 inch exhaust to the mufflers. Loud and very annoying
but moves the car very well. Other than the drone at 1400 RPM, I wouldn't change anything other than
larger injectors and V pulley set up for an extra 200 horse.
The LS6 has a great cam for a blower in its stock formation.
The approx $3,500 cam change, yields you 40hp with a safe tune,
The Heads as well, flow fantastic with a blower, but would ADD MORE.
I left my LS6 stock at 581whp which the car just works perfect with that power ,
my good friend did a A&A Cam with ported LS6 heads with same boost and he is 640whp.
On my last update to my car this past summer (it was supercharged with stock cam already), I went down to a 3.6 pulley, added LT's, swapped out the stock cam for a small blower cam (220/228 .600/.600 116LSA) and a set of LME ported 243 heads. My car runs great in traffic/normal use and comes alive when you get into it, best of both worlds for my uses. In my opinion, I think your cam choice is good and leaves room for head work down the road if you wanted a little more. Do you have the blower now? If yes, I assume you will pin the new cam and if the blower is coming in the future, I would go ahead and have the cam pinned now when you add the new cam so you are ready for boost when you get there and save some money and "pin it while you are there".
With this set up, I am 650/575 to the wheels and is the best of both worlds. Great daily driver and fun weekend drag strip fun-I don't do track stuff, just strip stuff and that is how I spec'd out this build with my builder/tuner.
