Default How far can I push the boost. . .

I am getting ready to start purchasing parts for this winter's car upgrade. I am trying to figure out which option is best:

1. sell short block and blower - go with 427cu in. . .
2. head and cam addition to add to existing setup.
3. forged pistons, rods, rings and up the boost.

Given these three options and only cursory consideration, it appears that option three will generate the most bang for the buck.

Now, for this thread, let us assume that I am going to forge the pistons, rods and rings. . .how far can I push the stock block/crank? What kind of results can I expect from 10psi?

I did option #2 on my tt car. by lowereing compression with the heads I was able to up the boost from 7 to 10. I gained approximately 70rwhp/100rwtq without effecting the cars drivability. I am not sure about the performance increase for a s/c car but I would think the results should be similiar. But option #3 is some real good insurance. As for the block and crank I have heard they are very capable of handling 650-700fwhp.

I just received a very good suggestion, that I should update my post with some more info. . .

I currently have an ATI P1SC running 6-7 psi. I am running 415rwhp/405rwtq through the full exhast and a strengthened A4 (with shift kit). The tune is very conservative and I probably have another 20hp/tq left in tuning. . .but for now, it's safe!

I generally just drive the car Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I have only been to the track 2 times. Next year I plan on making a few more trips; however, this car is not going to be raced at the track very often!

The stock block and crank will be able to deal with just about anything you can throw at it with a p1 blower. The weak points will most likely continue to be the pistons and sealing surfaces of the heads (even with forged pistons, although they will take way more abuse than the fragile stock setup).

Don't forget that the fuel, pulley system, and driveline will all probably need upgrades as you turn the boost up.

I would not do 3 without 2. If you do 3, you are going to want to lower the compression some via dished pistons. This will require a better breathing valve train to get the power out of it.

I'm planning on doing the heads and cam first, and then having the new shortblock on standby for when something blows up. This will allow me to get the majority of the tune and other supporting systems dialed in before I put the final rev of the motor in. I like the idea of having the stock motor as a testing device. It makes the entire process much more relaxing if you know you have another short block ready to drop in when something screws up (and it will).

I got a complete forged motor for sale right now for $5500 outright no core and you don't have to pay shipping 'cause it's at speed inc. in Schaumburg till friday.
Checkout my for sale thread, just doing the H&C will cost you about that much.
