i have the vortech supercharger kit sitting in my basement waiting to be installed but i am having 2nd thoughts. i have a 97 c5 with 43k miles on it. auto trans. what do you guys think? should i go ahead with the install? i am worried about future costs of possibly a broken trans or a blown rear end etc.... should i worry? what should i do?
Re: 2nd thoughts on installing supercharger (c5guy4life)
Stop worrying so much and do it. I'm not sure about your auto tranny, but the rear will be fine, unless you launch on slicks at the strip a few too many times.
Re: 2nd thoughts on installing supercharger (c5guy4life)
I really think that you should go ahead with the project. I have not broken anything despite running autocrosses, laps on a road course, and 1/4 mile passes on drag radials.
Re: 2nd thoughts on installing supercharger (VortechC5)
Ithink you should put it on. I had simular concerns and installed mine anyway
and haven't regretted it. When you do,you make a car that normally is a
PITA to work on a little tougher, but that is the only real down side. Gas
milage is the same, power levels WAY up,it will be a different car and you will
like it. :yesnod:

I'll just parrot what the others have said. Unles you do a lot of launching on slicks (and it sounds like you don't) your rear diff will be fine. You might have some troubles with your transmission though - they don't seem to be as strong as the M6's. That said, I am about as far as it gets from knowledgable about automatic cars...
If you get a good LS1Edit tune, and are good about treating your engine well, the stock bottom should last for a long, long time.
...and if you decide you want to sell it, drop me a line ;)

I would go ahead and install it! You can always adjust the pulley size and control the amount of boost you make. I think I've heard that for each pound of boost you make, you get about 20 HP. I'll echo Jake, get a good tune and enjoy your car!

Are you the only driver? If yes then just run it at your comfort level. If you plant your foot from start up to shut down or if you loan out the car to others, then Terry Burger is right on. If you drive conservatively and want some occational fun, I'm sure your car will outlast you. Relax and have fun. It's a sports car not a Geo Metro. The beauty of a Vortech or Procharger is that they only produce power when you get on it. Otherwise there is no boost to speak of.
Go for it!

C5guy4life,
It sounds like you haven't ridden in a supercharged C5 Vette! :troll Once you ride in one, you will have to do it! :reddevil
Under 3500 to 4000 RPM the car will drive like stock with no increased stress, as there is very little boost below that RPM-so no increased power/stress!
This will represent 98% of your driving.
Get a shift kit (higher system pressure for more solid shifts) and install the blower and thank us all! :smash:

Just curious. What makes you think his engine and/or transmission will blow? Not a flame, just a question.
He might drive it for years with no problems, or it might nuke the first time he nails it. It all comes down to tuning, and what condition his current parts are in. I'd agree with the previous post that his trans has some miles on it and is likely to give out. As for the engine, who knows. I'm just pointing out if he can't afford to break it, he shouldn't modify it. :)

Good Advice.
A Lot of folks learned that one the hard way in the DSM club I used to be part of. If you need to save up a few thousand bucks as a starter towards a new trans or a new engine "just in case", then maybe it might be wise to let the kit sit in your basement for a few months longer.
I always keep a few thou in a 'backup' mod fund just in case something weird happens and I need to make an emergency repair or two, and that way it doesn't have to come out of "responsible" money accounts.
