I have decided I am going to put a forged 383 in my car. Now I just need to decide if I should go 8 rib or with a modified bracket that gives more pulley wrap. I'd like to hear your opinions -- it's obviously cheaper (labor wise) to do the 8 rib upgrade while the car is torn apart for the motor swap.
What components are you putting in your car? Blower, pulley size......?
D1SC... probably no smaller than a 4.0" pulley (although I am not sure how much boost this will make on the 383.. I probably want to be in the 8-10psi range). It seems like a pulley size that will work fine on a modified bracket, but on the other hand, if I ever want to increase the boost later on I don't want to paint myself into a corner.
This is 99% street car 1% track car so I am not aiming to get totally crazy on the HP numbers. For a street car on street tires there is such a thing as "too much horsepower" and my guess is that starts right around the 600-650rwhp range.
I know you can make big numbers on a forged 346, but I wanted the increased power without a drivability sacrifice, and from what I've heard the 383 will give a little more oomph down low. Seems like a great combo for a belt driven centrifugal since they rob power to drive the blower.
I'd go with Andy's new 8 rib setup and adjustable alternator bracket. A S/C 383 is going to make alot of TQ and 6 rib belt will be a problem.
Cool, thanks for the advice.
How on earth does your car hook up on the street? 750hp??? Am I aiming too low by going for the 600hp target? Can you really make a car with that much power streetable?
Reality is that the 8 rib is best. If you plan on hooking up with that much power, plan on upgrading your drive line, trans and diff. I broke mine on saturday and as a result It will cost big dollars to upgrade it now.
