Default BOOST QUESTION

Im getting a D1Sc and I have Stage II Heads and Cam Package......Andy recommended 4.5 Pulley and I should be around 10 Lb. of Boost.
My question is....Is 10 Lb. a reasonable number with this set up.

My completely stock motored D1-SC car put down 487rwhp with nothing more than a set of Kook's LT headers, keep in mind my car is an A4 with a pretty loose 3600 t/c. Your car will certainly be in the mid 500's easy, my guess is closer to 600 with h/c. You didn't mention if you've got an M6 or A4? With M6 it'll look great on the dyno compared to a similarly modified A4.

My car will ocassionally see 10lbs., just be sure to keep the a/f ratio good and safe (may need a fuel system upgrade?) and you should be fine. Keep us posted on your results.

YMMV

there is no way in hell I would run 10 lbs of boost with heads and cam on a stock bottom end... last time I did that I cracked the block in 4 places, grenaded the pistons and had to buy all new stuff from the ground up.

Roy
There is a reason that the kits from the manufacturers stay at 7 psi.
There is probably a small safety margin, but operating on the street involves built up deposits in heads/pistons, overheating on hot days, perhaps not the best tune initially, and not hearing knock due to sound systems, and lots of other stuff that I can't think of or don't know!

First off, I don't think you will make a consistent 10lbs of boost with that setup. It should be closer to 8 and may hit 10-11 on cold nights. There is a ton of variables at hand so it is really hard to say for sure.

I think 10lbs of boost is fine for a stock shortblock IF (this is a big IF), you keep it from detonating.

The key is to keep the PCV from contaminating the fuel supply and to make sure you have a good tune with plenty of high octane fuel going in. Race gas or alky injection is also good insurance to have. An onboard WB and some ability to scan critical PCM parameters are also mandatory for those living on the edge.

You may also want to consider dropping the static compression a bit with a set of heads designed for FI. 70+cc chambers can help decrease the sensitivity to detonation quite a bit. Your heads should be OK if you keep it below 10psi, but you really never know until you try it.

Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you are prepared financially/mentally for the motor to let go. You are going to be on the edge with very little room for mistakes. The forged internals are pretty forgiving, but the stock internals keep you real honest.

Knowing your past history with the n20 makes me think you are comfortable on the edge, but there is no reason not to start out slow and work your way up.

Most of us have 3-4 pulleys in our garage.

It certainly wouln't hurt to check with Andy, after all..... They are his heads/cam setup. I tend to agree with Quick about being on the ragged edge, but your only REAL concern is detonation (should be a 4 letter word), keep the fuel up, the boost in check and you may/should be fine.

Let us know how you make out.

10 lbs might be ok for a stock block with very carefull tuning... but adding heads and cam and 10 lbs is IMO too much... Its your car and if you want to push that much HP through it without building it up stronger (forged bottom end) then like Quick says... be ready mentally and financially to go out and buy a built motor when this one lets go... because its not going to be a question of if... but when.

ching.. ching...

Let me get this straight, Andy says 10 lbs and you are asking if it is OK? I am confused as to why you have any questions, if he doesn't know then who does?

I would say 8-10 lbs with that setup would be expected. I would also expect to blow the motor. JMHO.
