I can't remeber its name, but I think that was its claim to fame. Anyone know what I'm talking about??? (I know that left me completly open).
I think you are talking about Tubi. They make high-end exhaust systems for exotics.

most exotics use a 180* crank as opposed to the 90* cranks in our v8's. the difference that the 180* crank makes is that you do not have two cylinders on the same bank firing one right after the other like the 90* crank does. the 180* crank alternates evenly from side to side. the old smallblock chevy(90* crank) firing order was 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. as you can see each bank has 2 cylinders that fire one right after the other(8-4, 5-7). that means that you get 2 small exhaust pulses and one large exhaust pulse from each side of the engine. the ls1 firing order is (1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3). the ls1 sounds a bit more exotic because only 1 bank has 2 cylinders firing one right after the other(2-6). that means that you get 2 small pulses and 1 large pulse from one side. and 4 even ones from the other side.

you can make the ls1 sound much more exotic by using true equal length headers, an x-pipe and no cats. the exhaust system is up to the taste of the owner. the flowmasters sounded the best to me. some people say the sound kind of tin canny... but that higher pitch is what gives you the exotic wail at high rpms. some say stingers. stingers sound like a $20 set of glass packs to me.

Yep it was Tubi. Why you'd want to mask the bad-boy V8 growl is beyond me though. Try a VTec, you might like that better.

I am Running a set of the GM LS6 cnc heads, kooks headers/x-pipe, no cats and stock Ti exhaust, it gets the higher pitched "exotic" tone when you stand on it and start going over 3000-3500 rpms. During normal cruise and idle, not much louder than stock. I like the sound. No drone at all. However, Ferrari sound? I dont think so Tim.

Nice explanation!

I knew about the LS1 firing order being changed, but I don't know why it was changed. Just for the "exotic" sound? Or for better performance?

Ciao,

Rick

The Ferrari engine also uses a 180 degree crankshaft, which in turn makes the motor act/sound diffierent. The Chevy V8 is a 90 degree crank.

Man, the poor guy is toast. I guess I'll add my buns to the grill too. To be honest, if I could afford the new Ferrari, either the V8 or the V12, I would buy one instead of the Corvette. yet, this should not be construed as un appreciation for the Vette. I am very thankful to Chevy for making a world class sports car that I can afford. But if cash were less of an issue, I would buy a Ferrari.

Anyway, I absolutely love the sound of the Ferrari engines. The V8's actually sound very similar to the V12's. The thoughts about 180 degree cranks giving a more balanced sound, a more even exhaust not are absolutely correct. But that is only with a truly separate dual exhaust system. Ours are not separated, they join together in the middle which is why a new Corvette doesn't have the same gutsy sound of earlier pre 75 Vettes. Combining the exhaust ahead of the mufflers makes the car sound like it has twice as many cylinders. Such a V8 sounds more like a V16 as far as the number of little explosions or pulses emanating from each pipe. Or to put it another way, a 3000 rpm V8 would sound more like a V12 true dual exhaust Ferrari making 4000 rpm.

I once ran my 85 Vette with the exhaust pipes disconnected from the cat back. It was very Ferrari-esque above 3000rpm at full throttle! At 6000rpm my Vette was making the same pulses per minute as an 8000rpm V12 Ferrari, now that's what most people think of when they think of Ferrari. High winding, screaming engines! But in general, smaller pipes give a higher pitch sound more like that of the small bore Ferrari engines. Bigger pistons also make a deeper exhaust note. There is a reason a Tuba has a deeper note than a trombone, which is deeper than a trumpet, etc.

I have also fantasized of doing something to my Z to make that perfect exhaust note. A pair of McCord power plates (cutouts) mounted behind the cross over might be the perfect solution.

Wow, you guys are brutal. Perhaps the guys phrased his question poorly (I'd say he did)...

If he was asking how to get a higher-pitched, raspy sound (perhaps one that is more "Ferrari" than "Mustang"), then I would point him right toward the Corsa Ti's. That's what I have on my car, and it's the exact sound I was after. I did NOT want a low, rumbling exhaust note. I, personally, think that sounds much better on a Mustang/Camaro.

Now, if that's NOT what the guy wanted to know, then... I sure can't help. LOL
