anybody know the downside to having a K&N airfilter or a blackwing filter element------Do they filter as well as they should, are they safe with no long term effects or should i not worry
I`ve had a K&N oval cone filter and a hi- flow airbridge on my `03 Z for over a year now . No codes and a noticable SOTP gain. Hopefully headers and a tune soon. Also 390 gears & 160 stat. Very fun on the street!
They are both great filters. The problem comes in when owners over oil them after cleaning. GM can and has, voided warranty claims if evidence of this is on the MAF screen.
I second that, I had a Blackwing on my '99 and when I got the '03 Z I put the same one on the Z. Well in about 300 miles the car started to run and sound terrible. I took it to the dealer and they said there was oil on the MAF and it was coming from the aftermarket air filter. Well I haven't done anything to the filter since I got it except clean it with an air hose. The dealer replaced the MAF under warrinty and shes running fine now. I have no idea where the oil came from after so long but ...... it can happen.
I'm not sure why you would have had a problem from the filter if it had not been re-oiled. And I'm very surprised they replaced your MAF under warranty, unless it didn't show signs of filter oil on it.
I would not put one of those oiled filters on a Corvette. It is too easy to get too much oil on them and foul the MAF sensor. Not worth the trouble for the minimal, if any, power gain.
my car runs fine with the blackwing setup but im wondering if these oiled mesh filters like K&N and blackwing offer enough filtering protection compared to factory paper elements??
They offer superior filtering because the oil collects debri easier, then as they collect more debri they filter even better. So the dirtier they are the better they filter but the less they breath (more like a paper filter).
You have to remember these type of fitlers have been around for many many years and used in the racing community.
Yes it is a slight trade off for power vers filtering but, it's not enough loss of filtering to worry about. As I said before, the biggest issue is when you re-oil them. If you over oil, you can damage your MAF.
So if you never race your car and only drive on the streets, this type of filter may not be for you. I only use the paper filter on my Z06 because I feel the hp gain wouldn't be noticed by me anyway.
