Default ZO6 Interior Noise

I drove my first ZO6 a 2003, The interior noise from the exhaust and tires was loud to a point it was difficult to hear the passenger talking at a normal level . The dealers Corvrette "expert " said they are all like that as they have tinner glass and less sound deadner to save wieght ....... does this sound correct ?....... I will try to drive another ZO6 before I purchase , but if anyone can give me the stright story I would appreciate it

The Z06 has several weight saving features, among them the thinner glass and minimal sound deadening material. The Z06 is purpose built for performance not luxury, even though it does have some nice upscale features, like HUD, memory option, auto climate control, etc. If you are looking for a quiet cruiser the Z is not your car. The Z06 is designed to be lighter, faster and more nimble and this is how it achieves it's awesome performance...i.e. 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, 1.1 G lateral acceleration, etc.

You may prefer the coupe as it is quieter but still offers outstanding performance. Those who desire the kind of performance that the Z06 puts out are not generally concerned with quiet interiors and soft rides.

The Z06 is a brute with supercar level performance. Quiet is not one of its desired nor expected qualities.

I love my Z06 and am amazed at it's docile side, but that is not what I bought it for, even though it is my daily driver. I bought it for it's performance and I love all the sounds it makes. BTW, I don't seem to have trouble hearing my passengers...unless I am at full throttle...at that point I am not listening to them anyway, I am listening to the beautiful sound of my screaming 405 hp LS6!

Hope you find the right car for you...good luck!

I love the noise, it tells me allot about what is going on between my Z06 and the road.
I like it that way.

And that was one awsome post Scott04Z

The easiest way to reduce the cabin noise is with a trunk partition. You can make one for cheap, or buy several different styles/types from CF vendors for $99 to $400. I went with the 2.5 inch think foam partition with matching carpet and a Z06 logo from Eckler's for $99 -

They all greatly reduce the road/exhaust and tire noise to the point I think my Z with B&B PRT's is as quiet as my 99 coupe with Corsa Indy's. As a side benefit the stereo sounds better and the HVAC works better. I like it better than the flapping cloth security shade used on the coupes.

Buy the Z install a partition and be happy. So you can have your cake and eat it too.

The Trunk Partitions definitely help out with the road noise.

Bought mine from www.PFYC.com

I was very happy with it and there are a bunch of other vendors out there as well.

Good Luck!

i'd like to get that partition simply because it looks cool and creates a little "shelf" area, but the exhaust noise is exactly what i like about the car!

oh well... i'll just have to suffer....

I disagree completely with some of the earlier posts, although I have a 2004 Z. It did sound at times like the rear hatch was open, but not as bad as what you describe. I never had difficulty listening to music or having conversations. I did manufacture my own partition and I used two 1/2 inch sound board pieces instead of fiber board. I also upgraded my stereo. But even before the stereo upgrade the sound board partition greatly reduced the noise from the rear. With the stereo upgrade the music sounds as good as my home stereo.
Is it possible that the Z you drove had mods which were designed to increase the exhaust noise? If so that would explain the level of noise that you heard. Some people prefer exhaust noise to music, or peace and quiet. With a Z you can have either, but for peace and quiet you will have to lose the mods and get or make a good partition.

I bought the $99 partition because the Borla Quad Stingers I installed were giving me a headache. I love the sound of the Borlas, but the headaches were getting to me. The partition solved the problem. It knocked the sound down 50%.

The Z was too lod for me too when I first got it. The stereo was unusuable due to all the interior noise. I Dynamatted ALL the interior surfaces and this really helped; however, the partition that Scott04Z put in has did almost as good a job.

My sound meter registered a drop from about 81db's to about 73db's after both the Dynamat and my own partition creation. Scott's reading was about 74db's using only his aftermarket partition. I use my car for a daily driver too and absolutely love it. Nearly 60k miles later, the grin on my face is as big as ever each time I get behind the wheel.

Hi Ed C -

I have a Z06 and a coupe - The Z is a little louder inside - but not much in my opinion.

On C5's there is some pretty big rolling stock, and you are sitting right on the back tires, so it stands to reason you will hear a lot of sound from those big meats slapping the road.

Normal conversation is fine unless you are higher in the RPM range, i.e. highway cruising is liveable.

best regards -

When I got mine a couple of years ago the F1 runcraps were very worn and terrible for road noise. This could explain the problem.
