I just bought my 99 white FRC and it came with some off-white side moulding and I want to take it off. Anyone done this before and what is the best way to do it?
I also have a 99 and took off my moldings 4 days after I bought the car...Go to a sporting goods store and buy some fishing line. You'll also need a hair dryer and some heavy gloves(to hold the fishing line).
1. Hold a hair dryer to the molding, I heated about 3 to 4 inches at a time. Peel the molding back slowly and put the fishing line between the molding and the body and saw through the glue slowly. I didn't care about ruing the molding so I held the fishing line closer to the molding. Repeat this process a few inches at a time. As you heat the molding the glue softens so you can saw through it. Take your time with the small moldings on the fenders. They're harder to grab a hold of.
2. Once you have them peeled off clean off the glue residue on the car with WD40. Wash it and give it a nice coat of Zaino and nobody will ever know there was a molding on it. Good Luck...
I have a link to a few pics of my car in the "vette pics finally" thread.
GRRR...i pulled it off of one side and there is a faint yellow line that runs back along the side of my car now.....$(*#@&$....any ideas on the best way to get rid of that yellow line. i used some rubbing compound with no luck...any other ideas???
If the moldings were 'off white' could they have been painted and that line is some overspray? Try a clay bar? Good luck
No because the yellow is underneath where the moulding was. I talked to the guy i got the car from and he said that he put it on a year or so ago. I have a clay bar and i think that is gonna be my next plan of action when i get home from work...ill let you all know. if anyone else has any ideas or has had this happen to them, PLEASE post em. THANKS EVERYONE!
Post some pics so that we can see exactly what your talking about. Pics are worth a 1000 words.
But I still think it's just the glue. And no, the WD40 won't hurt the paint if you don't rub hell out of it and you wash it off immediately. If you don't like that, try the clay bar first.
