Default redtop battery support ?

I went out and purchased a redtop today. There was nothing wrong with the other battery but for $100 its a no brainer to me... Is there any tips from you guys on strapping it down? It does appear to have some sliding movement when held down with the pinch bolt in the front only...

Also, (even after reading this in a previous thread) - I dropped a socket into the depths below. Any pointers on getting it out without taking the battery tray out? I was going to buy a "magnet on a stick" type thing tomorrow, I can see it but can't reach it....

Thanks Everyone !!!

I have the Optima Red Top and use the stock battery hold down, just in case. It does have a little more room to slide around then the stock battery does.

Note the larger hold-down block on mine in the second pic below. I got it free from Optima. It's much more stable.

Default Back Lip for Battery

I just replaced my stock battery, after 3 years of use even though it was still working, with the Red Top (same thoughts - no brainer). It fit fine, just remember there is a back lip at the bottom that holds the back of the down also.

Same here.

jman1: Make sure your battery is slid all the way back so the rear lip is engaged before snugging down your hold down at the front. Also, if you happen to have a battery mat underneath the battery, I found that it raises it up too high to let the rear lip get a hold on the battery too. HTH

This is a great place isn't it. I had no idea there would be any issues regarding the battery hold down. Mine should probably be replaced this year so now I'll be aware of this.

After about 3 years in service and about 7 cycles of discharge & re-charge my Douglas battery went Kaput today. I charged it up fully last week and then trickle charged it and it barely turned over this morning. After a 1 hour drive with some highway time included I pulled back in my driveway and shut her off. Went to turn her back on and nothing, just clicking. Though I would have liked to buy a Red Top, I boosted the battery one last time and went down to the local gas station/garage. Though their distributor didn't sell the Optima, I "settled" on an AC Delco 78DT-6YR battery. I requested a dual terminal battery, which is exactly what I got. Hopefully I'll get a few years out of this one and eventually get around to finally getting an Optima. Wonder if these new batteries also have the leaking acid issue? Hmmmmmm.......

As for the dropped socket, once the battery is out you can take the 4 bolts out that hold the battery sill down to get to the bottom section where your socket is. It is a pain but you can retrieve.

I have the 34/78 in my 2000 coupe. It fits perfectly with the factory battery "holder" keeping it in place.
I also dropped a screw doing my install. My neighbor had something that looked like a radio antenna and I used this to get the screw out.

Mine came with a base that the battery sits on, that must be used to hold the battery in place, no movement.

You know, they only cost a few bucks. Why not do it right?

I too selected the larger 34/78 with 800 CCA rating. It came with 2 different hold-down clamps, but the factory clamp fit perfect and tight. I looked at the smaller one at the dealer and it looked like it would absolutely need a different hold down, because it is a slightly smaller footprint. Good luck getting it firmly attached......and retreiving your dropped tool.

Default redtop battery support follow-up

Got the socket out by removing the battery tray and using a magnet. I think it made the battery sit better once re-installed because now the battery is tight without and rocking movement like before. Of course used the Optima Battery hold down clip also. Thanks -
