Had my '02 Z06 for about four days.
Rain most every day
So far, in sneaking out between raindrops for some wheel time I have come to the conclusion that this is The absolute best Corvette ever.
While the 68 427 4 spd was a Brute & beautiful to look at. It was a handful of whiteknuckles driving at its limits. ( not that it wasnt fun!)
This Z06 is as tame as a mercedes 300Diesel (& just as tight)
but when you ask more, it delivers whopping performance with finesse!
Vette # 6 is best one yet!

I don't want to hijack your thread and I certainly don't want to start an argument but check out the old road tests and you will find that the Z06 is faster than that stock 68 427 Vette (tri-power, L88, or ZL1). I have made this point in other threads to the disbelief of some.

Depends on how the L88 was setup from the factory (gears, headers (dealer installed, etc) I have seen an old mag article with an L88 that busted into the 11's stock. Granted they did put better tires on it (not stock) but given todays advantage in the tire department I think its only fair.
Now having said that, the Z06 is a far superior car in every department except resale value.

Exactly my point !
This 02 & up stock Z06 is the baddest stock Vette to roll outa Detroit ( ahem.... Bowling Green) INCLUDING the Beloved 67 -68 427 tripower
I had performance cars in the late 60's & early 70's & watched as they dumbed down the engines & horsepower because of oil crisis & emissions
i. e. the late 70''s Vettes, Camaro's, Mustangs became shells of themselves & we wondered if we'd ever have factory high performance again.
Now, years later they have surpassed their previous standards of acceleration & handling This is a good thing!!!!!!
The Z06 is a rocket. I am surprised however on its resale value considering the car's engineering. For me it does not matter as I made the choice on getting the C5 Z06 vs the C6 Z51 and I am not selling. I buy cars based on design and engineering, not model years.

"Set up" is another way of saying modified. Since I said stock, do we get to use an equivalent "set up" (gears, headers, tires) on the Z06?
Resale value of the 68 427 Vette is better simply because of the car's age. Most have been wrecked, scrapped, converted to racers, etc. There are not many left. The resale value of the 68 did not look near so good when the car was only 5 years old. You cannot assess the intrinsic value of the Z06 until it is at least 25 years old.
What makes the 01-04 special in my mind is not the world class performance, but the ability to use the car as a comfortable daily driver that gets great fuel mileage. My 03 has the usual bolt-on's and I'm guessing I'm making about 425 HP (at the crank) and I can sit in traffic creeping along in the morning and the car never complains, but let the roads clear and this car can be a beast.
It's by belief that the 01-04 Z is the worlds best performance car for under $100,000 and I can drive it every day, have it serviced at almost any Cheby dealer, requires little to no maintenance, returns unbelievable fuel mileage and will flat out whip 99% of the worlds so called performance cars.
