Default X-pipe installation info needed

I see all the posts about X-pipes and I have what many would consider a dumb question. Is the installation of the X-pipe a bolt on operation or is it something that involves cutting and welding?

I presently have ZO6 Ti's on my vert and am considering an X-pipe.

Most X-pipes will have flanges to bolt up to the muffler pipes but the engine end needs to be cut and the X-pipe slides in place and is either welded or clamped in place. All in all an easy job. You can use a sawsall to cut the stock pipes.

Let me be the first to tell you that this is not a dumb question...seeing how I asked the same question before I got my X pipe

The X pipe must be added to the engine side of the exhaust. I lined up the flanges on the muffler side and marked the engine side with a marker on the stock exhaust. Then I measured the amount of distance that the X pipe was to slide over the stock exhaust and subtracted it from my previous mark. Got out the saws-all and cut at that mark. Slid the X Pipe on...bolted up the flange end and then tightened down the clamps on the cut end...Done!!!

Peace

Default x pipe

No to steal the thread but can you pre-purchase a pipe for the engine side (pre-cut to length) rather than cutting the stock H pipe. I may want to put the stock H pipe back on when/if I sell.
Tks.

An X-pipe is $250-280. it's not worth removing. Just leave it in. if you really want to go back to stock you can usually buy a take off exhaust on EBAY cheaper than the X-pipe.

Thanks for the info about the X-pipe. I have ZO6 Ti's on my '02 vert that is otherwise completely stock. It is not as loud as I had anticipated that it would be but I plan to install an X-pipe and a ZO6 cover on the airbox. Would these changes be worth it and would they give me a little better sound?

I am not interested in the loud sound of Borlas or anything that noisy.

I don't think the X-pipe will make it louder in fact it may quiet it down a little and remove the popping sound some experience on decel. I installed an X-pipe at the same time I installed my Ti's and there isn't much difference from stock. But I love the tips and the OE fit and finish and light weight of the Ti's. It should breath a lot better as well along with the X-pipe.

I don't think the X will buy you much, if any, performance.

The Ti's sound great as stock. If you were to go with GHL's or Borla's,
the X will reduce significantly the popping.
I've had three systems on two cars with and without X pipes.

I'm now with the GHL without the X pipe and will stay that way.
I was a little, OK alot, put off by the deceleration popping at first,
but I have grown to love the sound.

There is ZERO resonance as long as you're anywhere near the right
gear.

A little hint in case you do go with the X...Cut the H-pipe about 3/4
inch shorter than what they call for. There's plenty of overlap and it
will allow for a much easier install and a little forward/backward
adjustment.

And yes, if you ever go back to stock, just keep the H-pipe and go
to a Midas. I did this and for $60 they made a couple of short
pieces to clamp the stocker back in. $60 saved me $280.

All the X-pipes I have seen require you to cut the stock pipes and then install the X-pipe. The front of the X-pipe slips on the stock exhaust just behind the cats and the rear of the X-pipe just bolts up to the catback exhaust.

This is all good to know. I just installed my Ti's today and love the look. The sound will have to wait for a month to hear them. But I guess an X pipe would be next. That is if I don't like the sound of the Ti's. But I am pretty sure that I will. Good to know how the X pipe is instaled though.
