Everyone,
I have read a few of the posts about the CLB kit we can get to fix the Column Lock problem in manual c5s. I got a letter in the mail from chevy to get it "fixed". A few questions for you all:
1)A few ppl said that the 'fix' was just flashing a new code into the cars cpu. Is this true?
2)Am i better off just installing the CLB and not taking it into a dealer?
3) And can this happen WHILE you are driving?
Btw, i have not had the column lock on me, but now am afraid of it locking while im driving.
My 2003 6sp never locked up. But i took it in when I got the recall notice. They put in a new part and re-program. It has worked great for 6 months. I have 18k on the car.

I had a CLB installed on the car but I went ahead and had the recall done. After getting the car back, the CLB went back on. Never had a problem with the column locking, but just wanted to be sure it didn't do it.

Jim does your column still lock after you remove the key? If it does you still have the potential to have the column lock up on you. All the re-program does is ensure that the fuel system shuts down when it does lock up on you.
If your steering wheel doesn't lock after you have pulled the key out of the ignition, then they disabled the column lock and you'll never have a problem. But this is the point that many of us here are a little mad at. And that is that GM won't disable the column lock on the 6 speeds. The reason being that the shifter doesn't lock like the A4 shifter does. Therefore they won't disable the column lock.
I hope that all made sense. .02 deposited - As EG would say.
Hey, I'm such a new owner that I'm not sure the CLB applies to automatics. Just bought a 2000 three days ago and the dealer told me but did not present any evidence that the column lock and seat belt retraction recalls had been complied with. Do I have to worry about the column locking up on an automatic?

The column locked on my 98 automatic so I would say yes you have reason to be concerned. I had the dealer disable the lock as a result of the recall. Do a search, there has been a lot of posts about the column lock.

If you can get into the car and your steering wheel can be turned without the key in the ignition. The recall has been done. If you can't turn the wheel it hasn't been done. They disable the column lock on the A4
