Default Passport 8500 question...

I've had an 8500 for a few years. I noticed a post about someone with a Valentine that upgraded the software.

My question is, the 8500 comes with a phone cord style cord. I was told that this was to be able to download new upgradeable software from your computer but I have yet to read or see anything about it.

If not able, why have a phone style cord?

The phone cable is just a different type of power cord. I have an 8500 on order and also ordered a prewired phone cable that will run to the rearview mirror harness for its power.

Dave,

The prewired phone cable that you ordered that runs into the rearview mirror harness, is that from Escort or one of the ones that a forum member sells?

I had one (from the forum member...was like 11.00 bucks) but it died... ended up throwing it away.

Thanks,

Mark

I have the 8500. I use the modified cable that allows me to power it off the rearview mirror. The phone style cord is called a smart cord only because the lighter end has a visual led alarm and mute button.

Another reason I like the smart cord. Though I hate the fact my ashtray flap door has to be part open to allow entry to the cigarette lighter, I love the mute button at my fingertips. I never could get use to pushing the button on the actual detector to mute it.

From forum member TeamSpeed. Same price, $11.

To have it reprogrammed I believe you have to send it to them. This may help. http://www.escortradar.com/radar-detector-faq.htm

I think Valentine Research is way more reliable when it comes to upgrades. I have heard of people who bought Bels and Escorts that were supposedly upgradeable only to find out that that certain model couldn't be upgraded with the same features. They will however give you $50 off a new model or some BS like that.

Check here for some information about Bel not backing up their upgrades:
