Default Wideband O2 Installation

I thought I'd post this as (perhaps) a refreshing departure for those (in their quest to break the monotony of winter cabin fever) looking for “something completely different" from some of the more common subject threads here.

I suspect that not too many will chance a foray over to the Scan and Tune section very often, if at all, so this may be a bit novel, although I know for a fact that there are some talented tuners amongst us. Tuning is a complex process that is as frustrating as it is rewarding. Having the right tools is important to the optimization process. Scanning/tuning software and hardware is a must along with some helpful additional sensors such as one or more wideband oxygen sensors that provide real-time air/fuel ratio data. Tuning seems to be as much of an empirical, iterative technique as it is a science, especially to the uninitiated. But shoveling the mods into an LS1/6 without the benefits of tuning can be an expensive, unproductive exercise at best and a downright destructive one at worst. Also, there are an almost infinite number of mod combinations and configurations that each setup really needs it's own tuning. Canned mail-order tuning may get you 85% there but it's that last few % that give you the best combination of reliability and drivability.

I just completed my PLX Devices M-250 wideband kit installation. I'd like to thank Whitney, AllCammedUp, for posting his installation pics and description on the EFILive scanning/tuning forum, as it was a valuable guide that eased the process for me. I used the same locations for the controller and external output connectors as Whitney did since they were nicely tucked away and yet still remained accessible.

I've only tested the setup a couple of times since I just finished the installation Tuesday night but the WB setup is working nicely with EFILive. I haven't gotten the EGT probe registering yet but I hope to have time to sort that out this weekend. I suspect a missing ground at this point. I’m definitely on the steep side of the learning curve myself so I have an interesting road ahead of me.

I took some time after I completed the installation to put together a preliminary web page detailing the project. It's a bit rough and incomplete but I'll try and update it as time allows. You can view it at the link below.

Patches, once again, you outdid yourself. Unbelieveably detailed and descriptive as usual. Wow!

Thank you for this writeup.

welcome to the world of DIY wide-band. It's very nice having the capability to tune your own car.

Awesome write up. Im doing the wideband, EGT and logger on my other project car and this inspired me to start it.

Why would you need to cover up your wideband gauge??

Chris, the gauge LEDs are bright with no dimming capability. Plus, the digits and radial bar are constantly moving as the A/F ratio changes. I would imagine it'd get a bit distracting - especially at night. The cap is a quick way to block it out temporarily. Whitney put a switch on his to be able to shut it off for the same reason. I used a cap for a clean look.

Who did the machine work on the bezel and shift light pod? That's impressive. Unbelievable setup.

A m/c shop that does most of my precision machining for the medical fiberoptic stuff I design. They're very good and particularly talented at machining plastics.

That's impressive and intimidating to my untrained eye.
Thanks Ed for the webpage. I will certainly bookmark that for possible future use.

The headers look new, even after have the bungs welded. Did you have them Jet Hot coated after that?

Nope. They came Jet-Hot coated from FLP originally but I didn't do anything to this header except wipe it clean with a little metal polish. They have dulled a little in 3 years but there's no real corrosion on them. The welder used a spot spray of high temp paint. I have some here as well that looks almost like Jet-Hot. Check out what it did for my turndowns.
