which transmission last longer on the vettes the m6 or the a4.
neither being abused, and both of them being maintained regularly. And why does it last longer than the other???

The key word here would be abused. I've got an A4 with 23,000 plus, kind of, maybe, not sure if I abuse it. Well I might jump on it a little. It still runs good. I hope to get 80,00 more miles on the tranny. Don't know about the m6. Good luck with your poll.

If well maintained, they should both last until the car wears out if not abused. But first you have to define "abused"... the C5 is a sports car which, in and of itself, suggests an "aggressive" driving style which could be viewed as abuse.

So I did not vote. Not enough choices.

2 cents deposited.

well put. I dont think i abuse my mn6 .. but if i were forced to, i'd say the mn6 would outlast the a4 .. i dunno about the clutch .. but the tranny would be good.

Having had vettes with both, and considering clutch replacement as normal wear. I 've had better luck with sticks than autos.

Drive it like an old lady, they would probably last equal time. Drive it like a sports car, and this does not mean abusing the car, and the MN6 (minus the clutch which is a normal wearing item) will outlast the 4L60/65E trans by many miles. (This is dependent upon the person driving the MN6 can shift without grinding gears.)

I think a more well reasoned question is which is less costly to operate in the long run, and replacing clutches must be considered part of the manual deal.

When I was 20 and I could press 450 lbs., I could do a clutch job on my GTO in the driveway by myself for about $30; and I needed to do them about every 15,000 miles. Now I couldn't hold up a manual transmission to align the shaft to save my life, so it would have to go to the shop. What's a clutch job in a Vette now? $400?

I agree the clutch is part of the MN6 so more cost if you drive it at all .Most manual car's get a clutch at some piont.

There are more polls here then Warsaw lataly, what is going on with that?
I would say it depends how you drive and what HP mods you have that would paly into what trans last longer.

I was hoping to see a choice such as they are equal or will last the same. I have always had great service from any of my vehicles manual or automatic. Most had over 150,000 miles and still on the same clutch in the case of the manuals, and just routine service for the automatics. Those manuals were all in high performance vehicles, ( 71 SS Nova, 93 Vette, for examples), and I didn't baby them, but also didn't beat on them when it wasn't needed.

With that said, I say either will last for well over 100,000 miles if taken care of, that means normal service such as fluid and filter changes to the automatic as recommended by the owners manual. In the case of the manual, not abusing the clutch on every single drive around the block, and shifting smooooooothly will add miles to the service life of the clutch and transmission components.

Also, this is taking into consideration that the vehicle is not producing more than about 10 - 15% greater HP/TQ than what came from the factory, and the rear tire size is about right for the HP so as to allow something to give to prevent driveline breakage.

There is a lot more going on in an A4, the more the stuff going on the more the stuff to go wrong. If you want to add the M6 clutch, don't forget the A4 converter clutch. I seen why too many of those fail. If you figure just wear them out then I would guess 50/50, but if you figure the chances of parts failing (like in the real world) I would think you will be better with a M6.
