I read somewhere that one of the tests that a C5 must pass prior to it's availibility on the market is that it must be run at wide open throttle, top speed, starting with a full tank of gas and until that tank runs dry. The engine is then inspected for wear & tear.
Was I dreaming, or is this for real?
A link to a website detailing this would be appreciated!

not dreaming .. and the best part there were no signs of wear.
It is mentioned in the book "All Corvettes are Red" by James Schefter but I cant remember the page.
All new engines has to run X hours wide open throttle with no problems as a test. The LS1 did that and they continued the test for a very long time and when they finally shut it down, everything was more or less like new.
Every GM car and truck is subjected to certain durability test schedules, and Corvettes go through all of them. Then the fun begins. Corvette has a well-earned reputation for being a car that you can drive out of the showroom and onto a racetrack with little or no modification. To protect that reputation, Corvette engineers do things to the car that would tighten the sphincter muscle of the average driver. All Corvettes, not just the Z06, undergo 250 miles of full-bore autocross testing, 24 hours of road-course testing at competition speeds, and a grueling wide-open throttle test that has the car run at its 175-mph top speed until the gas tank runs dry about 30 minutes later. No question, the Z06 comes up as a very special version of a very special car. Somewhere, Zora Arkus-Duntov is smiling.

Mine went 93 miles before it ran out of gas...the cruise control it is much more efficient then just holding your foot to the floor. You'd think the engineers at GM would know that!

Well, they were probably not going for fuel efficiency at WOT. Instead, I think that by keeping WOT for 30 minutes, it imposes more stress on the car, therefore making the requirements to pass the test more stringent. Which is all fine and dandy by me!
