A question for all you do it yourself gearhead types......
Lets suppose for a moment that you were looking at getting another corvette....a C5 to be more specific, and you budget was 35Gs. Would you A. go out and find the nicest, cleanest, lowest milage Z06 you could find and be happy with your bone stock Z06 or would you B. go out and find a nice ,clean, well cared for 99-2000 FRC for 26-28 thousand and spend the other 7-9 thousand on heads, cam, wheels, tires, etc....????? Please keep in mind, that choice C, which I know many of you are thinking, is not an option. (Choice C being to buy that Z06 for 35 and continue to mod it.....thats exactly what I did the first time around and thats exactly why I had to sell it...my credit card bill with all the mods on it go to be more expensive than the car payment). Any and all input is much appriciated
Spending the same amount on either car........I'd go with plan A. If you ever want to re-sell the car, the newer Z06 will bring in way more than a heavily modded 99 FRC. Also the heavily modded cars require extra cash laying around to fix all the stuff that can break....It's really depends on what you want to be doing after the purchase.......
I would buy the Z and keep telling myself "no mods. no mods. no mods". Then I'd mod anyway. Sorry, is this what you meant by Option C? It wasn't like it was planned that way.

I would like to think the Unmodded ZO6 is like money in the bank should you need to sell it.
well, I understand the point about the value of selling the Z down the road...but the goal here is to do this right this time around so that I dont have to sell. I loved that 2002 Z and have been kicking myself ever since I sold it, but at the time, it was the right thing to do because I dug myself into a hole financially. And Id love to just get another 02 Electron Blue Z06, but I know that its impossible for me to have a fast toy and not tinker. Maybe by next winter the prices on 2002 Zs will have dropped a little more and I can find a nice one, and still have some cash left over to play with.

You've just answered the question... it's impossible to not tinker, so you might as well plan for it. Your wallet will thank you.

Part of the fun of these cars is modding them per your personality. You can mod at your leisure, if a month or 2 is tight, just wait untill the cash is there to play.
For me, the choice would be easy. I hate the FRC body style so I'd absolutely get the cheaper car and mod it.
But I'm not you. You already had one so you must like them. In that case, I'd be very patient and hunt for a Z06 that you could afford WITH some money left over for mods.
