Default cleaning a blackwing

So its been 30,000 miles on my blackwing. What am i supposed to do to clean this thing? Does it need to be re-oiled? what am i supposed to use? How often are we supposed to clean these things?

Can this be done in an afternoon if i have to drive it tomorrow?

Its probably something that many of us have overlooked why not throw it into the tech tips?

There's a special cleaner for this filter I believe. I also heard about Simple Green being used. I don't really know but I have one too and am at this step also. So if anyone else knows a lil more, feel free to chime on in.

Blackwing sells a kit that contains the cleaner and the oil with complete instructions. Very easy to do and it doesn't take long.

PRetty simple process with the kit. Not sure about Simple Green being used.

Simple Green will work fine - let it soak a bit, then hose it out from the inside of the filter. It should be lightly re-oiled once it's dry. I got a spare BW so I wouldn't have any downtime waiting for the cleaned filter to dry, which I was told could take a day. (Maybe you could use a hairdryer to accerate the drying process.)

I bought the cleaning kit for mine from Corvette's of Houston... it's like 10 -15 bucks so it's easy on the wallet. As for cleaning, just spray the supplied cleaner on the filter and let it soak. Then hose it off outside from the inside out to release the trapped particles. Then let it dry inside (overnight will work) and re-oil it... Works great

The Blackwing DOES NOT need to be cleaned until the Butterball "thing" pops -- go look at it or read the instructions.

If you screw up the cleaning, you can do more damage to the filter (and your engine), than not cleaning it. 30,000 miles is way too early to bel cleaning it, unless you live in Baja.

"Turkey popper" is there for a reason and a little dirt doesn't degrade performance. As noted, too much filter oil can impair the MAF.

Unless you drive the Baja every afternoon, the Blackwing should give great service life to and through 100,000 miles before it needs cleaning.
That is from a Blackwing dealer that sells the kits. I asked the question, and my first sentance is almost a direct quote from the reply. Check the filter monitor, if it hasn't popped, then it's still flowing well.
I even had another person stand up front while I performed a couple of throttle blips, he said the monitor twitched slightly, I have about 25,000 miles on the Blackwing right out of the box. Hope this helps you decide if your really needs cleaning.
