A tune up is simply maintenance, such as chaging plus and wires. A Dyno tune, puts your car on the dyno measures the power and the air/fuel ratios and changes your computers programming to create more power.

with the dyno definition. However, I don't think the concept of a "tune up" exists any longer.
In the "old days," a tune up consisted of replacing point, plugs and condenser, and setting the timing (with a chalk mark and timing light). But today's cars (C5 in particular) render a traditional tune up obsolete. High energy ignition systems make plugs last a long time, there are no moving points or condenser to replace, and computers control timing (among other things).
A dyno tune is completely optional on a stock vehicle. Your car will run fine without it. If however, you are nutz about these cars (like the rest of us here), and want to squeeze every last bit of performance out... go ahead and have it done. An added side benefit (at least on a stock engine) is that the fuel economy and emissions will probably improve a bit, and you'll have a baseline measurement when mod-fever strikes.

I agree. Dyno tunes run about $500, but if done properly can squeeze out a few extra ponies.
Part of a dyno tune is typically the "LS1 Edit" which is the software to make the changes to the Fuel/Air ratio, etc. Many tuners do the tune and charge you once, thereafter, when they do more mods for you there is no charge for dyno tuning adjustments to max the power of the newly added mods.
Dyno tunes are worth the bucks. I recently changed out my stock air filter for a K&N on my car that previoulsy dynoed at 335 rwhp, after the filter change my car dynoed at 330. We dialed it in with a dyno tune, regained the 5 lost and picked up another 5 for rwhp of 340.
