I am planning on cutting about an inch off my stock 6-speed shifter this weekend...as many have done already. Before I do, I wonder if there are any members that regret doing it? I am relatively short...5'7" and drive with the seat pretty far back so that my legs are straight to reach the pedals. Appreciate any feedback before the surgery
Just a few thoughts before she undergoes the knife...
after you cut the shifter, you will still have a sloppy shifter. With a designed short shifter.. you will have the short throw and the precision of a designed shifter. I hated my stock shifter... because it was so sloppy, not because it was too tall... I have a B&M ripper and after four years , I still smile every time I make shift...
Coast: You and I are in the same boat. 5'7" and a MN6. I shortened mine about 3 months ago and have no regrets. I can see the AC controls now, I don't feel like I'm shifting from mid chest level and the feel of the throw is improved. No it's not a B&M or... but it suits me fine for my daily driver.
Cut it, if you don't like it, it has not cost you anything. If you don't like it, you can go after market.
I just dropped in the C6 shifter. 1st, 3rd and 6th are a much easier reach do to the angled shaft, and the shifter itself falls much more readily to hand.
See Patches or my write ups on the C6 shifter. Patches gives a very good comparison between the C5/C6/and aftermarket set ups...

LOVE my C6 shifter, the difference is night and day!
I cut my shifter about a month ago 3/4 inch. I would like to have it a little shorter but didn't won't to fool with cutting the threads at the time. They say if you use the stock shift **** cutting over that won't do any good due to the threading in the stock ****. I like it much better now mainly because it fits my hand better with my arm resting on the armrest. The stock shifter doesn't really feel all that sloppy to me, but I haven't driven one with a aftermarket either. To answer you question, no, no regrets.

What are some short throw shifter options? I know the Ripper, and the hurst, any others? Also what is the diff btwn the hurst and ripper? ( price, length, looks ) I am looking to get 1 soon, but am clueless on what to get or where to even buy. Thanks guys
Put a Hurst in my '02 SS and always had noise. So when I got the C5, I decided to cut it down first and then move to an aftermarket shifter if I didn't like the feel. Cut it down about an inch, love it. My 'mod' eye is now looking at other projects...shifter is now all good

...short throw ...not short.
...and get rid of the slop with B&M, HURST, ...I had the short and it was just one step closer to the HURST short throw precision shift...
