I'm finally ready to begin looking for my dream car (2001 vert ). The problem is, I've narrowed my search significantly and the cars I'm currently looking at are in other states. I plan to make a trip to check them out myself, but am a bit hesitant to make such a purchase w/o a comprehensive independent inspection.
Am I overly paranoid? What's your thoughts on some of the independent nation-wide services? Do you have any other suggestions?
had my 'candidates' all checked out by local Chevy dealers, as well as carfax, warranty claims - the usual stuff...
Thanks! All of the carfax reports on my candidates came back clean, and I was considering checking the first one out this weekend. If it checked out, I was going to run the vin at the dealer and arange for inspection. I'm just not sure how the inspection process would work, as I'm over 300 miles away. I'm guessing that I'd need an appointment.
www.magoos.net is a good outfit - I've had several of our clients use them with good results. Worth the $150 or so if you think you've found the right car, imho.
If you are using a dealer, you should be able to arrange with the service manager to do the inspection on your dime by giving them a credit card number, then have the seller take it in for the inspection.

I just got a C5 from an individual 1200 miles away. I paid CarChex $79.95 and they send an inspector out to the sellers home. He test drove the car and gave me a detailed emailed report in a day and a half. It was awesome. Try carchex.com
I agree - they have a good reputation. Another way to do it is to see if there is a forum member in the area that can look at the car for you. Many members have done this - at least you could get a good idea what the car is like before you make a trip.
