Default Performance Axle Question

Friend of mine looking at a used Vette - 2002 I think. the owner doesn't know if it has the performance axle or not (an A4 transmisison - I think the optional performance axle is 3.15). Should be able to tell form the VIN, right, or is there a different code somewhere that shows all the options? How can he tell if it has the axle he wants?

Look at the sticker on the inside of the glove box door; It will show G92 if it has the 3.15 gears.

That's the place. Hopefully it has the upgraded axle.

Also if the 02 has the Z51 suspension the 3.15 performance ratio axle was a required option with the A4.

You can also tell by the rpms at 70mph. If it's around 2000rpm, it's 3.15s. If it's closer to 1500rpm, it's the 2.73s.

Everyone has answered your question so I will just post an opinion.

Using the words "performance axle" and "3:15" in the same sentence is an oxymoron! Really wish they would of added a bit more rear in the A4 from the factory.

Good luck

My MN6 tach's at 1500 at 70 MPH as well, with the stock 3:42's. All the performance associated with neck breaking acceleration and 28 miles to the gallon on the open road. I think Dave Hill and Chevy hit a homerun on this setup! Thanks Dave

A .50 6th gear ratio will do that.

That's why I NEVER use 6th. If you read the specs on these cars, top speed is reached in 5th gear...WAY too much overdrive in 6th!!

But it is "performance" to this guy:

Tim,

I agree. Your website is . especially like the automatic car cover. quite ingenious. what happens if you close the door without the car in the garage? Must look strange!

There is one surefire way to determine if you have the 3.15 when the glovebox sticker is gone.

Place the gear selector in 3rd and get it up to 75mph. The tach will read 3150rpm for the 3.15 or 2730 for the 2.73. You can't get anymore exact than that, it works every time.

it hovers about 1 foot from the floor... and it does look weird

it's still working perfectly - now going on 4 years (knocking on wood - for luck)
