Default Torque converter question......

OK, I understand about gearing on an A4; I have a 2:73. But what I'm curious about is this: If I put in another torque converter with a higher stall speed (competition or whatever), will I get the "pull" that lower gears would give me and keep my top end speed? ...or am I looking to burn the candle at both ends?

Most aftermarket converters are very efficient around 98%. Top end speed will only change with larger gears.

A high stall T/C will greatly help your cars performance even with 2.73 gears. With a really good T/C (SS3600 for example) gears are not as important for performance as they are with the stock T/C. BUT you will get a good deal more looseness with 2.73s & and a high stall T/C than you'll get if you have at least 3.42 gears. If I were you I would get at least 3.42 gears and a good stall. You will get better performance & better driveability (less looseness) and about the same top speed you will get with 2.73s. For the most part top speed in a stock C5 is limited by drag & HP, not gearing.

TQ converter will not change top speed. If you go with the gears also, 3.42s, your top speed will still be up in the very fast range.... drag limited. I would go with gears and TQ converter at the same time. The gears would give the biggest SOTP feel. The removal of TQ management will also give a huge SOTP increase.
