I posted this in the audio section also but there are far more people over here.
I am putting a sub in my 03 coupe and was wandering if I should put a 10 or 12 inch sub in the car. I listen to a club and dance music and need a little more thump. I am affraid that the 12 would be to much you know like the annoying shaking and ratting you hear around town where the stereo cost more than the car.
If you're only looking to put one sub in your car, then I would STRONGLY suggest a JL 13w7. I have 3 10" jl 10w 3's in my car and my friends one 13w7 hits 7 more db than my setup. It is truely an amazing speaker.
I did a 12". The big thing is to get a high quality one and install it right so there is no resonance. Mine came loose once and I thought I'd blown it (same thing if something rides on it just right). No experiece with a 10", though it would probably sound good too...
It is best to match the sub to the amount of available air space. First determine how much airspace you are willing to sacrafice then you can determine which sub you can use. Since you are looking to use one sub it would be best if you use a high quality sub with a strong amp on it. JL Audio has never let me down. A 12w6v2 with a 500/1 will rock so will the 10" version. Also if you get an amp with a remote bass control , like the 500/1, you will have more control over the sub from the front of the car.
Thanks for the replies. I am going to order a box from subthump (12 inch flat top) it has 1.1 square foot of air space. I am also looking at Alpine stuff 12 inch sub and 300-350 watt amp.
Depends who your date tonight , just kidding , couldn't let that one get by. But really the JLAUDIO stealth box is a good choice , but if you want low thump you may go listen to a 4th order bandpass box , but that might not fit as nice .
I wanted a nice balanced sound, not too much bass, but more than GM gave me. I added an Alpine 10" Type R and an Alpine amp. I think a 12" would be too much bass. I had to reduce the bass output on my 10".
Well I guess I am going with the 12, I just spoke with the guy at subthump and they have already made my box. I guess I can sell it if it doesn't work out.
This is mine.... single 10" Kenwood 2005 Excelon duel voice coil 2 ohm... sounds great... remember its not just the sub but the enclosure & amp..... I'm feeding mine 1000w....

It is more the enclosure and amp than the sub. If you put an excellent driver in a poor enclosure you now have a poor driver. Same if you under power it or over power. Getting the right combination is key.
From the looks of the subthump box they are nice. If the airspace matches your sub you should be very happy with it.

I've got a couple of Image Dynamics 10" subwoofers and a custom Corvette box with a Kicker amp for sale, and not to mention a slot for easy access to the 12 disk changer mounted in the box. I have pics. PM me if you wanna know more, it's a good deal.
