Default Shaved Door Handle Members.........

Question......Talked to my painter last night, stated that they are illegal. He told me, definately in Jersey and many more states. Stated, Law Enforcement and EMS couldn't get people out of their cars. Told me cops can have car impounded on the spot, and impound yard will not release car til new doors are installed. Just wanting your thoughts before I "might" do this mod. Roadrage1

Never heard of that. I know alot of people with shaved door handles here in Florida and that is news to me. You should be able to look NJ state laws online. Have you tried that?

On another note if you decide to shave the handles and do not know how to do an emergency release let me know...I have an awesome way of making sure you do not get shut out.

I seriously doubt that one.

Ever hear of the "jaws of life"? That is what they use when they cannot get the doors open on cars after an accident..which isn't that uncommon. Have someone T-bone your door and see if the handle helps you open it.

Dragstrips do not allow shaved door handles....but I've never once heard of them being illegal on the street.

I cannot imagine that enough people in any state legislature know of "shaved" door handles that they would care enough to pass a law. I am an attorney, currently working in civil litigation, but I have worked in a prosecutor's office and have a solid criminal / traffic law background. I have never, never, heard of such a law.

Of course, this is not really a subject for debate. There either is or isn't such a law. A quick look at the statutes should resolve it.

I wouldnt worry about that shop. Many other companies will do it for you. GB has it on his vette, looks great. I would have done it when I had my paint work done but 1/4 mile tracks wont let you run if you do. Rather not take that chance.

Trust me, this sounds like I've got the keys to get into ANY car.. and what's the difference, half the time when we get on scene at a serious accident, forcible entry into the vehicle is almost guaranteed.

However, if there is a law in NJ, it would be covered under Title 39, or the Administrative Code

I am a police officer in NJ and I've never seen a Title 39 statute banning shaved door handles.

I was going to do this last summer. The autobody shop told me the same thing. So I called the police and asked them. They confirmed. They said that if I were ever going through a road block... or got pulled over for any reason, the car would be impounded on the spot. The door handles would have to be re-installed. They said the reasons were as you stated above. I tried to argue this... but they basically said sorry... that's just the way it is. So it's true out here in Vancouver, BC. I have seen some cars here and there... I assume they are just taking the risk.

Not sure I believe this one. I'm usually on board with law enforcement but if this is true then it's so stupid. More so then the front plate law.

How would things be any different if the car doors are locked? It wouldn't be! You could still use a slim jim or the jaws of life.

This design on the original Viper was scratched due to the Feds mandated it on production cars. I dont think this is the case on any cars that are modded by the owner. Worst case you would have to file for a custom or street rod plate.

Well I can see that this would be an issue for the LEO's. If they can't have shaved door openers then we can't. We weren't allowed to have tinted windows around here till the LEO's thought it was a great idea to hide their lights and go stealth. Then and only then were we able to have tinted windows. If the EMS or anyone else wants into your car a missing door opener isn't going to stop them. But it gives them another way to make your life misserable for no reason at all. Except for the simple fact that they can. My .02

Default "The Man"

Well, I've broken just about every other stupid law on the CT books regarding vehicular modifications (loud exhaust, loud stereo, no front tag, illegal tint, neon plate, performance hood seal, slammed so low that the headlights are too low, ad nauseum) - so I'm shaving my handles in the near future.

Can't spend my one and only life wondering what "The Man" is going to do.

I don't think the hood seal is illegal.

Some azz 'ole in CT Law Enforcement with nothing better to do will see this and seek you out ....and use your own post as evidence in prosecution!

Your gonna have to put in a non-airbag sterring wheel like I did as you keep adding on more Libertarian modifications.

I still don't understand how anyone could think just because you have door handles, it means you can get in the car. Is it easier to get into a locked car with door handles over one without them?
