Default Functional Side gills???

So if they were functional, what would the side gills be used for on the C5? Venting the brakes....or venting the engine compartment?

Even though you see a plastic shroud in place, the gills do open into the engine compartment and I do believe they are functional - venting underhood.

they would be used from passing through air to get the front end on the ground past 200 ...

or if you have a TiT they are used for the air filters.

They are functional. Air comes in underneath and through the radiator past the engine and out the gills.

It took me awhile to notice there wasn't much of an opening in the gills. I assumed they "did" something more than just looking cool!

Are they that effective since there really is no clear path? They certainly are not getting direct flow through since they are blocked by a piece of plastic.

Let's hear more on this .... are our side vents like stickers on a rice mobile? If so, I'm filling mine in with Bondo. Please convince me that they have a meaningful function.

They're not completely blocked by the shrouds; it's sort of like water - if there's an opening it will find its way through, particularly when you're moving forward. Some folks who do HPDEs have additionally reported better cooling and less air pressure underhood by removing the shrouds.

I used to have a link where they had pictures of a C5-R 3d model shown in a virtual wind tunnel. Can't remember the side gills, but I do remember that the vented hood really worked. Sorry, doesn't help much, but if I find the link again, I'll post it.
