Installed a C6 shifter today in my '02 Z. The more I drive it, the more I like it. Took a little while to get used to it but now I wonder how I ever lived without it. Took me about 2 hours to put in. The only reason was because that stupid lock key on the old shifter had been removed by the dealer at some point and they had the top of it so bunged up I had to drill it out. Once that was out, it went like a breeze.
Only thing I wish I could do is cut threads on it so I can put my 8 Ball **** back on it. The shaft is an odd size and can't seem to find an die that will fit it. Oh well.
Thanks to Patches earlier post, it could have not been easier.
Thanks to Fichtner Chevrolet for a great kit price.

Try www.flameball.com I'm sure he can make one with the correct threads for a fair price
I am not sure the height difference, but it is considerably more comfortable and usable. The throw is a bit shorter as well. This link will answer most of your questions:
Since the C6 shifter is not threaded, I doubt anyone will have a custom threaded ****. I wanted to cut my own threads on the shaft and then thread my 8 ball onto the shaft.
